I was watching the Clint Eastwood movie "Bloodwork" on video the other night, the one where Clint plays a former F.B.I. profiler. It's an okay film, but definately not one of his best. Actually, I thought the best thing in it was this rather clever puzzle.

A serial killer is dubbed "the Code Killer" by the press because he leaves the same mysterious message scrawled in blood at the scene of his crimes:

908 725 643

From this "code" can you deduce either the serial killer's identity or name?

Please don't answer if you've already seen the film. And please avoid this thread if you don't want the movie spoiled for you.

Apparently, someone seems to have got it, at least most of it.

Anyone else?

It's not a very solid puzzle is it? 09234 592 387 523345 6079 would yield the same answer.

Very true! But I'm not quite what you mean by "solid". Not challenging? Too obvious? Not well thought out? Possibly. Many puzzles and riddles do share the same solution.
Take the classic "Black, and White and red(read) all over" How many riddles is that the answer to?

Puzzles tend to have answers that when you figure them out you go "Eureka". Okay so nobody really says "Eureka". The point is that a good puzzle should have a very clear definitive answer. The puzzle is the lock and the answer the key. This puzzle's answer works on any number combination that has all numbers but one. If it was a real puzzle it would be: 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 90 2 3 4 5... This more clearly points the finger at the missing one and tells you to delete the space in no one. To Noone, a person's last name.

It's not a bad idea, just poorly executed.

Your point is taken. As a puzzle, it appears to be pretty poor. But then again, you have to also look at the context. In the movie, this code was supposedly created by a serial killer whose purpose is to mislead, not to clearly point to his identity. He has purposely added the spaces to make the police believe it is a code or even a phone number. He wants to taunt them, not hand himself over to them. I don't believe the Riddler ever really wanted Batman to solve his riddles either.

Thanks!

I'm embarrased to admit, unlike all of you, I wasn't able to solve this obvious "puzzle" as I was watching the movie. Actually I didn't even think to try. Quarter way through, it was so obvious who the killer was, the clue wasn't necessary.

Grendel used that line of reasoning to great effect when he visited Gotham.
