I'm looking for sources to help me put together a act relating to gambling and swindles.
I already have enough resources for cards, the shell game, fast & loose and coins so don't bother with these. What I need is sources and/or effects somehow relating to gambling and using, or pertaining to -Dice games. Please, no dice stacking. -Bills. -Poker chips. I'm aware of Tabman's quality products. Anything else? -Roulette. -Possibly horse or dog races. Help is appreciated. Thanks. |

There are several dice books at http://www.gamblersgeneralstore.com that cover dice games where the odds favor the operator. I'll look closer the next time I'm there and see if I can get some titles.

You might get a few ideas (especially for dice) from here:

I have six locks on my door all in a row. When I go out, I only lock every other one. I figure no matter how long somebody stands there picking the locks, they are always locking three. Elayne Boosler

See if you can find "Shorty" a short change bill counting swindle. Really nice.

Dai Vernon has a really great routine with bills using a short change in Early Vernon.
There is also the Bret Allerton routine in the stars of magic that Bert used big bills to do. And there is a great bill routine in My Best by JG Thompson Jr. As for dice you should really check out the L and L video/DVD of Ross Bertram he does some amazing things with dice and cards. I hope this helps.

Thanks all.
Forgot Allerton's "Bamboozle" and am reminded of a Mike Close routine. Keep them coming. |

While not a true gambling bit...in The Art of Close-Up Magic (vol. 1)there is an effect titled Unfair Shake by Horace Bennett.

Thanks for the info everyone.
Mike, I just Googled for "Unfair Shake" and saw some other useful stuff. I do have Bob King's Dice Routine which is loosely based on Bennett's effect. While it would be nice, the effects don't have be true gambling bits but the props should be used in gambling. Often such effects can are adaptable. Hopefully the act will be more fun than a serious gambling demo. Thanks to you folks my list of possible effect is growing. So far I'm considering:
Thanks again. Any ideas for horse racing, roulette or dominoes?? More! More! |

I want to mention Dave V's Quintuplicate Coincidence effect. Fits in very well with a gambling theme.

Although it's not a "con," it could fit well in a presentation such as this.
Thanks for the mention.

You are welcome Dave. Yes I forgot before I posted he was mostly asking about swindles. But I think as you said it does fit presentation wise.

If you read my post of effects I'm considering, and are familiar them, you will realize I'm not "mostly asking about swindles".
Those effects use gambling props or relate to gambling but for the most part are intended to be fun and somewhat magical. Thanks for the suggestions thus far. They're all appreciated. |

There are of course various poker deals and demonstrations available. There is a domino monti trick I have seen advertised. I think I would go the stack of quarters(chips) route rather than cylinder and coins(chips) as it can be performed at close distances.
Remember it can be a trick with just the props, so a matrix with coins and bills as the cover will work well. kirk |

Jaz,
While not a referral to a source this story might help. Way back when I was single I was dating a beautiful woman from Texas. Texas has some good looking women. Anyway I digress; she and I spent a week together at her sister’s home in Arkansas where the entire family made their living working at a nearby casino. It was not at all unusual to see them get up about ten in the morning, have breakfast, get dressed in their tuxedos and go to work. Her brother-in-law was a blackjack dealer and worked the Roulette wheel. The casino liked him working the wheel because they made a lot more money when he was in charge. I asked him what the secret was and he said that while the wheels were honest he had learned over the years to time the dropping of the ball to the speed of the wheel. Frowned upon officially but done much of the time, it allows the operator to see which side of the wheel has the heaviest amount of betting or largest potential for pay outs and have the ball land on the opposite side. It does not ensure there will not be a winner, but it favors the casino in there are less big winners. Hope this helps. Frank Tougas
