Hello,

I am new to the magic Café, and I am looking for help. Our doves have finally produced an egg that hatched. Do I need to do anything special for the baby bird or will mother bird take care of it?

Also, there is still another egg, unhatched, should I leave it? Might it still hatch?

Thanks for any and all advice.
Thanks,
Mary B

Hi MaryBeth,
Congratulations on yopur new addition. I raised all the doves I currently use in my act. At one time I had 26 doves! (Not in the act, I use 5, just had that many...) From 1 mom and dad pair! LOL The Mom and Dad bird will take care of your new dove. For about a week they will be very protective. Regarding the second egg. Yes, it may hatch but if it doesn't, the parents will break it. I don't want to be gross, but they will take care of it themselves. After about 4-5 days your new dove will be feathered on the outside and will then slowly feather on the underside. Keep fresh water and food available and your new dove(s) should be fine. If I can be of any help with you, just PM me and I will do what I can! Good luck!

Tony is right. The parents have an instinct that tells them what to do.It's kind of fun watching them at first. The little one will let them know when it's time to eat. Both the mom and the dad will feed it. Eventually, they will start to ignore the baby but don't worry. They are just training it to eat by itself. They won't let it starve. The second egg should hatch in a day or two but I'd give it a week before removing it.

Hey Tony, only 26 birds? I have over 40 at one time, all living in my basement and Bob Sanders has over 100. Now that's a lot of mouths to feed.

Yeah, Dave sold me my little buddies, and they also reproduced. It is one of coolest things you'll witness, its amazing how smart they really are. They can't fly for more then 5 seconds without crashing into a wall, but they can raise babies after babies after babies.. it's such a great experience. Have fun with it!

Hey Dave,
WOW! You're right, that is a lot of mouths to feed! LOL But, it is such an amazing thing to witness! I remember the feeling of awe as the babys first sat on the side of the nest and then continued to grow in no time at all. It never failed to amaze me that nature has "covered all the bases" when it comes to the parents raising their young. Gotta love it!!!

Thank you all for your help. The second egg hatched and the little family is doing fine.

Again thanks for your prompt responses and advice.
Now my husband will be trying to figure out how to add more doves to the show:)
Thanks,
Mary B
