On page 199 of Prism, in The Violet Book of Mentalism, Phil Goldstein has an effect entitled "Rainbow Matrix". After the lines are drawn by the spectators, the book states "that the four colors can be arranged into twenty-four different arrangements".
I'm having a hard time understanding how 4 rows with 4 different colors produces 24 different combinations? If anyone can help, I would sincerely appreciate it! |

Your first selection - which color to use on the first row - for that you have 4 possible choices.
Now you're left with 3 colors. Your second selection - which color to use on the second row - for that you have 3 possible choices. Now you're left with 2 colors. Your third selection - which color to use on the third row - for that you have 2 possible choices. Now you're left with one color which you must use on the last row. All in all - you have 4 X 3 X 2 = 24 possibilities. Still not convinced ? While it is absolutely correct that the spectator has only 24 possibilities,
you might claim that he randomly selected "4 out of 24" which is 255.024 possibilities ... S/ |
