I don't recall ever seeing an estimate. I would include anyone from the working Pro to the person seriously bite by the magic bug. Any reasonable estimates or credible sources?
Someone recently asked me, and I did not know, but I guessed at about 65,000 magicians -- which compared to about 6.5 billion people on earth means that there is 1 magician for every 100,000 people. (Clearly, the distribution is heavily skewed.) Does this seem reasonable? Nick
Let me explain. No, there is too much. Let me sum up.

This Café has 20,929 members, of which I'd say 3/4 meet your criteria, 15,696. I figure that only 10 percent of all Magicians are members here, making the number of Magicians in the world 156,960. That's my final answer, 156,960. I am not a credible source, I only play one here at the Café.

That number is a bit off. That's the number of registered names. There are some people -- a well-known Canadian performer -- who has registered under many, many names and been booted off. But you could be taking that into consideration. I would say that about 10% of the people registered here are still interested in magic. That's still a lot. I figure it would be closer to 25,000 or 30,000 in the world.
And it still just takes one of them to change a light bulb.

I'll go with a different sample technique and use ONLY data that I know. If others add similar data we can refine it further.
In my area there are three professional magicians out of the twenty magicians out of 300,000 people. That sample suggest 65,000,000 magicians world wide (I think). |

Nicholas,
Based on your proportion, there would be 65,000 world wide (for 6.5 billion.) Your numbers in your area seem low (but maybe not for a full time Pro,) but then again, there are possibly large areas of the world that may have an even smaller proportion of professional magicians.

I think that the number of magicians in the world is the same number as how many miles it is to the moon.
238,856 (on a good day) But that could change. I think.
Will you walk into my parlour? said the Spider to the Fly,
Tis the prettiest little parlour that ever you did spy; The way into my parlour is up a winding stair, And I've a many curious things to show when you are there. Oh no, no, said the little Fly, to ask me is in vain, For who goes up your winding stair -can ne'er come down again. |

I tried to address this back in February of this year. This was my response:
There is really no way to make an accurate count since we don't even have a working definition on what is a magician. Uncle Joe who does three rows of seven cards? But for an estimate I would take the combined subscribers of MUM, Linking Ring, MAGIC and Genii along with the total of registered people on this website and then do an average. I know that there are a lot of duplicates and web sites are notorious for people registering several times. But I think it would even itself out regarding those magicians who subscribe to nothing. That would give you a count for the USA. You would need to do the same for European countries if you wanted a world count. Frank Tougas

The kid that buys the "bitten coin" can usually be cured, and even made into a productive member of the magic community.
OTOH, the "middle-aged-grandma-weekend-warrior-clown" can really hurt us. One of the reasons I quit doing kid shows was one of these who hit the local market. She had no talent for magic. She had no skill with the props. I think she did all her practicing in front of her paying customers. When she started every show, she had a whole roomful of cheap props. It looked to me like she did a trick a minute -- ALL BADLY. And she hung a lot of paper.

They have the gimmick, they saw David Blaine on TV, so they are now ready to perform (in their minds). Especially in the light of the fact that Blaine has virtually NO presentation abilities (that is dynamic anyway). I think, also, that the statement that has weakened and trivialized magic the most was coined (I believe) by Marshall Brodien when he said, "Magic is EASY, once you know the secret!", and people believe it. ![]() |

That's when they need to see a real magician do his stuff. Then they go off with their tails between their legs.
For example, let's say that you do a sleightly (misspelling intended) different version of the bitten coin -- one that uses a completely different principle. Then you drop it into their hot, outstretched, grubby forepaws.

100,000 seems low to me. I'd put it more around 1,000,000.
The problem is, it's difficult to estimate the proportion in huge eastern population centres or indeed Africa. |

They all advertised magic as being easy. Once you learn magic and put the time in - magic IS easy. Making a living doing magic is HARD! As far as how many magicians are there in the world I think we should get the counting Count from the kids PBS to count them.
