I got started in comedy clubs back in 1982. At that time, there were about 25 comedy clubs in the US, and there were about 75 comics. That was perfect. There were three acts for each club, and they travelled around the country. Two years later there were about 1500 comedy clubs. There were still only 75 comics.
And 4,525 people who thought they were funny. I actually heard two comics arguing over who originated the "is this an audience or a jury?" line. One said, "It's mine! I'm an attorney." The other said, "I was doing that line before you even worked comedy clubs." I said, "Bob Hope did it on his television show before either of you geniuses was born."

Bob Hope is so old-school. No one in their right minds would study his stuff to learn about comedy!

Absolutely right. That makes as much sense as studying Charlie Parker to learn about jazz. Old school.

We don't consider someone an "attorney" if he has googled "how to dispute a speeding ticket."
A person is an "attorney" after years of study and passing the bar exam. We don't call someone a "doctor" if he went to WebMD and treated his child successfully for XYZ ailment. Or even if he's read a textbook on anatomy. And certainly not if he's read all of Dr. Oz's books. A doctor takes 4 years pre-med, then 4 years med school, then 2 years residency. Then he or she is called a doctor. Doesn't matter if he's the best in the world at taking someone's pulse. There are performers, creators, amateurs, professionals, lurkers, curious people, etc. MagicCafe forum members won't give you even a starting idea of how many magicians there are. Same with memberships in IBM or SAM. I make my income exclusively from performing but personally have never been a member in any magic club. As others have said, some of the pros are simply not frequenting the clubs and have never been a part of that scene. This leaves aside the fact that some workers suck at magic, and some amateurs are experts. On top of that, SAM is an American club. If the question is "how many magicians are there in the world?" then SAM's members won't help much. I have two MagicCafe accounts--the first one, Brainbuster, I lost the password to so I created this new one, Brainbu$ter. Someone above mentioned that only ~3,000 members have more than 50 posts (and therefore are "serious" members of this forum). I'd guess that many of those 3,000 have exactly 50 posts or 51 posts and created accounts simply to get into Inner Thoughts. The question needs to be refined and the definition of "magician" needs to be clarified. P.S. Once you know the secret of a magic trick, you still have all the work ahead of you. |

The question is magic in itself. Taking China into account alone I'm guessing a million magicians. Has anyone here found the answer?

To even start to answer this question you first have to determine what the actual definition of what "being a magician" is. Is it a working performer? Is it simply anyone that has ever bought or received (as a gift) a magic set or sven deck? Of all types of live entertainment, magic is the one thing that has no gatekeeper. Anyone can buy or receive a $2 magic trick and immediately self-proclaim themselves "a magician". But is that really an acceptable definition of a magician?
The first step has to be identifying what is and is not "a magician." I can't believe someone revived a 12-year-old thread. |

As long as the question remains open, the thread will remain alive Mindpro. lol

It's very hard to get membership in the Café with all the paid emails and everyone can just read the posts anyway so not many magicians actually register here. So the final answer would be 1,569,600. |

Am interesting question as well in my mind would be how many actually earn their entire living from magic?

How many magicians are out there? Too many for the workers and not enough for the dealers. More accurate than Hans Moretti with a Crossbow ! |

Let's say each state has five big cities; and let's say each of these cities has 100 full timers. That's 25000 for the country. Of course, for states like CA and NY, I'm probably underestimating, and states like Wyoming and Utah overestimating, but it's a starting point. I would say overall my number is probably the upper limit.

What is a big city? How many people?
Personally it be shocked if the number was much over 5,000. I have no facts to back it up and am not arguing just thinking the number is quite low. Then eliminate the whose partners have great jobs so they don't need one and it is even smaller.

I don't know that the partner issue is relevant in counting the number, but I think if you're talking about the kind of magic you do, that is, magic for adults and families, and eliminate the party clowns and strictly kid show workers, then I think 5000 could be a fair estimate.

I'm talking about even party clowns.
The spouse issue is there only to make a point about income. I bet that there are MORE birthday party magicians than any other type.

We have loads of magician’s business cards etcetera at the bar, collected over time. Occasionally a client will as us to book a magician for a private function.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.
