Regarding:

"In 1948 Arthur Buckley's book Principles and Deceptions it is written on page 33, "From experience I have found that it is better at the beginning to become proficient in the sleight that one intends to use rather than divide the practice time on numerous sleights that will seldom, if ever, be used when mastered. This I find particularly so with coin sleights. Coins are more difficult to master than cards or any other small objects are to the same degree of proficiency.""

Good idea, but read those words in context. Get a copy of "Principles and Deceptions" and see for yourself how many sleights Buckley himself found useful. When you read that there are "numerous sleights that will seldom, if ever, be used when mastered," keep in mind that Buckley thought nothing of hiding eight silver dollars in Downs palm, and producing them singly. Learn to perform "Phantasy in Silver" before you decide which sleights you don't need to master.

However, the sleights and/or routines Buckley found useful for his stage act may not neccessarily be the sleights and/or routines others will find useful for a close up act.

I contend that it is good to read and know as much as you can, but actually invest countless hours in what you intend to actually use.

Learning moves for the sake of learning moves, but never applying them is a waste of time imho.

Ouch, my beautifully written long post got eaten.

So short and to the point, beginners do not have the foundation of expereince to choose what to learn or not, so learn everything. You have a long time to learn with no schedule to keep. Just by continuing to attempt the various slights and techniques you will develop your abiltiy to handle the coins better in the things you already do. Someday you will have a use for each tool, especially if you already know how to use it.

One of the factors that you must consider is that "newbies" to coin magic need to get their hands, and brain-muscle-eye coordination developed. By working only on one sleight this doesn't progress very fast. When one set of muscles is tired out, then you can start on another sleight. In my experience since I haven't seen any specific routines solely for muscle development, then sleights and flourishes are the only choice. I always start my practice sessions with 5 mins of coin rolls for each hand, while CPing 4 coins in the opposite hand. I don't see the coin roll ever being used in a routine, but I feel that it is a good hand conditioner on its own. Same for a Himber Vanish, palm to palm transfer.
