I don`t usually work with smoke or fire, but a new show will require some white smoke to come from behind my radio, to make it look as though my radio is going haywire.
The smoke needs to appear authentic, but products like "Dragon`s Breath" are really too expensive as packaged and sold via magic dealers. As I would be performing this trick several times per day (for several months) I would like to keep this cost as low as possible. Also, no open flame will be used, only a hot wire, so Dragon`s Breath probably wouldn`t work in any case. So what would? Any suggestions for alternate substances and/or DIY recipes? (If there is a chance that answering here would viloate board rules, feel free to use the PM feature.) Many thanks! Chance |

Have you checked Howie diddits, or searched this category for smoke effects?

You might be able to use smoke powder in some slow cotton. A quick light and as the cotton burns it heats the smoke powder and produces a nice clowd of smoke. You can also get smoke powder in several different colors. The great thing is there is no open flame once the cotton has been lit.

CHeck with Jim Pace, the smoke items he is handling now are safe, the smoke is neither pungent smelling, nor harmful, and if it can be hidden behind something like it sounds like in your application, it should be perfrect.
Look here in this forum for soemof Jims posts about smoke. The unit puts out a nice big cloud of smoke, and with a little customization on the switch, it can work for a lot of nice effects. BroDavid

I am touring at the moment, so getting to a computer isn't always easy, but I'd like to thank everyone for their input so far!
to Jim: I went to your link, but I see really nothing very informative about the "safe smoke generator". It would be much appreciated if you could offer me the complete rundown on your products -- here or in private, it's all good to me. Many thanks in advance, Chance |

Hi Chance,
I do not know what you want from me regarding a complete rundown on my products. Can you be more specific? I would be happy to discuss applications, even some methods. Jim

Jim, you responded to my thread, not me to one of yours. Therefore I am assuming that you are responding to the content of my original post. So the product info I would be interested in, would be those products that would answer my original question/topic.
You did try posting a link off-site, but it was simply to one of your Ebay sales pages. This page carried no helpful info, and I said so. I simply asked to be directed to a page that might. No one is trying to test your patience in any way. I am in need of a usefull tool with the strong desired effect as described earlier. Chance |

Whoa Nellie, easy !
Maybe Jim shouldn't have worded it, "I don't know what you want from me ", but I don't believe he was being facetious, just sincerely asking for a little more detail in your request. It started out where one single product was recommended, but you did request a rundown on his productS,(plural) so he might have been wondering if you wanted specs and descriptions on his entire sales line. Are you requesting technical specifications, as in, what medium is consumed to produce the smoke / fog ? (This one I know: Distilled Water, Glycerin, and Propylene Glycol) Size of the unit ? Smoke output in CFM ? ( A useless spec there, actually).. it's essentially a mini fog machine that stands upright, about 8" tall or so. It can start cooking up fog from zero to 60 in about 3 or 4 seconds. I know of no modifications, like remote control, unless Jim's done some tinkering.. but the things hold a lot of promise, especially for those who like to experiment. Dragon's Breath is definitely not what you want, that's just a powder that's squirted at a flame to make it flare up, essentially. You could always just try a smoke bomb, but that might not fly too well with certain management. There are other smoke units out there, but they usually cost well over a hundred dollars, and are toxic to boot.
Just hanging out with the rest of my fellow dregs.

Thanks guys. From all the input here, along with Jim's PM, I am definitely leaning towards Jim's Generator.
Jim: Does the chimney have to be 8 inches long, or can it be made any shorter and still work well? Also, is there any cleaning required between uses, or can it be used repeatedly without any special care or equipment? And finally, how costly is the smoking fluid, and how many uses per bottle? Regards, Chance |
