I saw it the other day and it was great. I'd make some changes and write some routines. None seem to come with the gimmick, which could be used for a lot of things.

I just got back from a magic convention and I was surprised to see that Bob Little had them available and up for sale. My wife saw it and fell in love with the little guy as it would play big for our daycare market and even for our family festival crowds with a different routine we will be working on.
I think Bob said he sold 10 that day alone. We got ours for about $60 and it should be a lot of fun working out a routine for it. I already have an idea where he will do it blindfolded and then he will try to read which one I pick but a lot of comedy byplay inbetween with him trying to cheat etc. I think the script could be written for this and a voicetrack created by myseof to go along with it. I am not a ventriloqueist at all, but I have used voice tracks I have customized for my drawingboard routines. This should work perfect for this little guy. Kyle

The Magic Corner in Raleigh (www.themagiccorner.com) (Jon@themagiccorner.com) has the bear available at $50.00 last time I checked. I bought one and am currently using it at my restaurants. A lot of potential. If you're looking for other ideas consider getting ahold of Practical Magic's (http://www.practical-magic.com) lecture notes from KIDabra 2005. They have several great puppet by-play & magic routines designed for their shaggy dog puppet...but will play with the bear just as well.

Morrissey Magic in Toronto sells it for about $65.00 Canadian. It is a really simple to use prop and the bag doesn't have to go into the bear's mouth if you wanted to routine it another way.
Having said that much, if you were heartless enough, you could tear the little bu**er apart for the wizardry behind it all and create your own technical miracle. It has lots of potential, and we bought one as soon as we saw it demonstrated at the shop. All the best, Rob |

Den: Kelly saw it first and fell in love with the little guy. We are doing more day cares and I can see a lot of fun potential with the bear and with possible routines we can come up with it. It will take some time to develop a routine that fits our character and style of performance, but I am sure we will work that out and have fun with it.
I would be curious for anyones ideas for routines or patter or concept ideas on how they are currently using the bear or what they are planning to do with him. It might be fun to brainstorm and hear others ideas for this wonderful prop. Kyle

Since noone has mentioned it, the name of the effect is Bob-o the mind reading bear. I got mine from the Magic Depot for $55. http://www.magic.org/store/product_info.php?products_id=4588
I too am looking for a good routine to use with this bear as I am not a ventriloquist. If anyone comes up with anything that can be done pantomime, I would appreciate it. |

Ahem...I repeat... If you're looking for other ideas consider getting ahold of Practical Magic's (http://www.practical-magic.com) lecture notes from KIDabra 2005. They have several great puppet by-play & magic routines designed for their shaggy dog puppet...but will play with the bear just as well.
Since this is a for-sale manuscript, I won't go into detail...but the 10-20 minute magic routine included in the script works great with the bear. Skip

Thanks Skip. I will look into that. It seems like it could be adpated very well to the bear puppet.
Kyle Posted: Dec 3, 2005 8:00pm I just got done performing walk around and 3 shows for a large Air Force Holiday Party inside of a hangar on the base near us. It was for 5 hours and we had a blast. I decided at last minute to bring along my Mind reading teddy Bear and place it in the truck. I am SOOOO glad I did. There were a lot of very young children in attendance and it seemed like the other performers there were leaving them out because of not having anything suitable for the age level. I decided it was no better time then the present to test out my bear puppet. It worked like a charm. Now I am no ventriloquist but I realized I did not have to be. I created a customized voice for the character and the kids love him all the same. They did not care that I was nmouthing the voice for the bear at all and just laughed at the funny routines I came up with and tested out. They could relate to him and what he was doing. The trick that comes with it, is just an added benefit. I just wanted to let you guys know that it really was worth my investment and I am certainly adding it to my day care shows. I really was surprised by the effect it had on the little ones. Kyle

It's fine that you moved your lips as long as the character exists. There are lots of vents out there that couldn't vent to save their soul. They do good shows though.

Steve: Thanks for the post. I certinly know I am not vent guy at all, but I found myself really creating and getting and devloping this character of this magical puppet. I found myself sort of becoming him even though I was doing his voice and my mouth was clearly moving a lot. But you know what? Not one person cared at all. Every kid and adult just loved it because I think they got into the character and the situation that was going on. The more I did, the more I became more focused on this guy and what he could or would do. I was just really surprised and delighted by this revelation and am working on developing his character more and incorprating him into my shows.

Kyle, now you can imagine how I fealt after addng 4 Axtell puppets to my show.
Each one has his own character and they are just so much fun for me and my audience. I have only had them for 5 months but can't even think of performing without them. I'm glad your having fun with your teddy bear. If nothing else, it's magic that's gonna keep us young at heart for the rest of our born days. Take care, dani |

Dani: That is so true. I never thought of adding puppets to my shows by any means. There were two reasons I did so. 1) I have a day care show I have been working on and testing and building for a while now and felt puppets would be a perfect way to connect to the little kids in a fun matter and 2) My wife snuck out at the magic convention a few weeks back and came back saying look what I bought hehehe Oh wells what was I to do then.
I am very happy that she did so. I tried it out yesterday at the air base holiday show as a strolling bit and the kids simply LOVED him. Now I got started in magic as a pantomime guy who diud a LOT of costume character work. I saw myself going back to those days and being able to use that pantomime and character creation but move it from myself over to the puppet. It felt great. Now I stink and I am no vent at all by any means and nor do I claime to be one. I moved my mouth a lot when the character was doing his voice. But you know what? The kids did not care. They loved the little guy cause I think he had such a unique personality all his own. No one even once stopped and questioned that it was my voice ro that my mouth was moving. I foiund they were just having fun with it. I am now wkring on routines for use at the day cares I am doing and I think my magic bear puppet will go over great for this. I also want to look into coming up with other puppet based routines I can use for my festival work. Kyle

Puppets go great with little kids ,I have routine about the abc that kids just love and Ralph ,my puppet fits tha part to the T. Puppets and magic goes together great. Alson |

Alson:
Thanks for your post. Are you an actual ventriloquist using puppets? I only ask as I am not and I clearlymove my mouth when I am creating the customized characters voice ad personality. So far, no ne even cares that my mouth is moving. They just love the character I am creating and seem to fall in love with his humerous personality. The other idea is toi have the routines on voice tracks like Axtell does or customize my own. However, I am not even sure that isneccesary. I am exploring this further as I have never used puppets but find they should add a lot to my day care shows and shows where young kids are present. Kyle

Question. Can I pull the unit from the bear and place it in my Axtell Rodney Rabbit or My Rabbit in the hat Puppet?
Do you know if the unit can be purchased without the bear?

Good question Den. I have not really taken a complete look at the actual set up of the electronic unit. I can try and do that in the next day or two and let you know what I come across.

Den, the gimmick seems to be well sewn into the bear and probably glued at various points. It looks to me that you would wind up destroying the bear in any attempt to remove the gimmick. If that isn't a problem, then I suppose it would be relatively easy to transfer the gimmick to any other puppet...but a less experienced hand may wind up damaging the target puppet, as well.
You might check with the creator to see if the gimmick can be purchased separately. Skip
