I agree with Daren - Discrete Displacement is an excellent idea. I haven't seen the explanation on the DVD, but Josh used the move yesterday and fooled me badly.

It is pretty difficult to do well.It is based on the Larry Jennings piece.

I have this series, and have nothing but good things to say.
Vol. 1- great pieces on here for Ambitious card lovers, especially if you like the AC ending up in an impossible locations. The Discreet Displacement move and the variaitions and tricks taught are real foolers and easily worked out. (a little practice with the move, and work on routining and patter to suit the individual, and one could start using it at gigs the same day). In summary Vol1- is full of brain food and utilities that make it well worth the money. (DD thought of card is a "just add water and stir" worker, and the DD can be utilized in other stuff you already do but may want to simplify). Vol.2- This is the one for all you workers out there that are looking for some walk-around strong stuff to add to your pockets. Josh has included good pieces that involve predictions, tape measures, mostly cards, and a sweet hanging coins routine. This one is full of workers. Some of the tricks on here involve memorized deck work, but Josh gives a nice pep-talk for learning a stack so I personally decided to take the leap and memorize a deck and use Josh's advice to help with jazzing the deck. Oh, and the $1-$5 transpo on this DVD will make you consider tossing your gaff into the dark recesses of a drawer somewhere. This DVD is worth the price of the set. Vol. 3- is for the card workers out there and is easy to difficult, but all the effects are audience pleasers and strong magic. Triple TOC, Bluff shift teaching and Overlap Hitchcock are worth the price of the DVD. Overall- 9/10 I liked this series and will add much of it to my bag of tricks. The stuff Josh adds between the tricks is what will give this series quite a bit of its value. |

Josh told me about the tape measure trick and the Impromptu Bill Transpo about a year ago, I begged him on several occasions not to put it out, but I knew the day would come, these 2 tricks alone to me are worth the set. I do a lot of Mem deck work and we have discussed the Mem deck many hours into the night, Josh has some really good work on this topic worth checking out.

I have 2 volumes.2 and 3,I would say go for volume 2.This has a good bill change and the tape measure trick on it.There are a lot of versions of Triumph on Vol 3.
In the clip of Josh's one man show I could not believe how close some of his lines are to the Ricky Jay '52 Assistants' show.

Just wanted to share my thoughts on vol. 2 (it is the only vol. I have watched so far). I highly suggest picking up this volume (and probably all three). The material is top notch. The card magic is great, but the two effects that are worth the price of the DVD are Joshua's impromptu bill transpo and a GREAT hight prediction using a tape measure. Aside from those two fantastic effects, there are some really good card effects (some using memorized deck work), some close-up and some stage. There is also plenty of material on this volume, Joshua did not hold back. Any question on specific effects from volume 2, feel free to ask. Don't miss out on this DVD.

Here’s my modest review of the new Joshua Jay offering.
Let me summarize everything I’m about to say in one sentence: Get these DVDs! I’m not going to comment on the individual effects, but rather, give my impressions on the set as a whole. I have thoroughly enjoyed each of these DVDs and have found several things that I’ll start working on. A few effects are so easy that just the minimum amount of time on presentation is all that’s required. Some are more difficult but generate so much audience reaction that you won’t mind putting time in on them. Joshua has made some very creative additions to the normal way these types of videos are made. There are the standard presentations of the tricks in front of an L&L audience (although, thankfully, with mostly new spectators) and the lecture-style explanations which follow. But he’s added several clips from his one-man show in front of a theatre audience to give us a better feel for how an effect plays in the real world. As well, there are things like a six-minute B&W short film, a behind-the-scenes documentary and a gambling slide-show that just make the set unique. He gives a lot of background for the effects he teaches including describing a few evolutionary stages that will probably never be attempted by 99% of us. But that’s alright since the videos are so long that these occasional flights don’t take away from the explanatory value of the tricks. They’re just “extra” and they’re worth watching. For your interest, the DVDs range in length from the shortest at one hour forty-one minutes (plus the six-minute film) to the longest at two hours thirteen minutes. The effects range from almost self-working to advanced. There’s something for everyone including some discussion on a few valuable sleights. Some of the easiest tricks are also among the most clever and will make you smile. The interview segments with Simon Aronson are interesting and may motivate you to learn a memorized deck. A few effects with a mem deck are taught and they’re killers. I’ve avoided mem deck work but I’m rethinking it now. One of the greatest strengths of the set is the clarity and completeness of the explanations. Joshua has been lecturing on some of these for years and it shows in his responses to unasked, but thought of, questions. He spends a lot of time on details and nuances – the kind of thing working pros appreciate. You get the impression that Joshua really wants his viewers to understand and perform what he’s teaching. I have quite a number of videos and DVDs now and I place this set up there among the best three or four. |

Well, I missed a savings, Joshua lectured at our ring last night, loved several of his offerings, "tape measure" chinese coins, and many others, the lecture special was the 3 dvd set for 90 bucks, I spent a hundred on coins and notes, lol, now wish I had grabbed the dvd's at that price, seeing the reviews, I am gonna order from l&l

Josh is coming to Indianapolis to lecture on November 3. I can't wait. I'll probably wait to pick up the DVD's until then. Now I'm gonna be stuck waiting for those as well.

Let me just say that I like Mr jay as a performer although I feel he has picked up a few other magicians styles along the way,Dave Williamson for one.A drawback of watching too many l&l videos perhaps. Anyway after reading some of the hype on this man I thought I can't go wrong here I'll maybe pick up something new from his dvd's.I recieved them and watched vol.1 with antisipation.Well, not blown away but maybe blown down, the only thing I found interesting on vol.1 was the reminder of the dispalcement move which I used years ago from a magic book but I can't remember which one,i am sure it'e someones add on move could be Marlo or Al Leech. The aspirin bottle location "please don't waste my time",I have a good idea card to envelope sealed in titanium safe locked in fort knox."Wow it's great" There are far better ambitious card routines just buy the Ammar card dvd and learn that. I liked his little movie Heckler, I just wished it would have been longer. I was curious to see his one man "sell out acclaimed"show but was dissapointed as I didn't find the magic very entertaining and some of the moves were a bit obvious, also in that lighting you could have produced an elephant from under an 12" silk. As for the sold out packed or what ever,It's not exactly the Albert Hall. I don't know if you noticed but mr jay could do with working on his tilt move sorry but it stuck out like a sore thumb.(keep your thumb parallel with the deck) Ive only watched vol.1 so I expect much more in the next two. Sorry to sound so negative but I find that magicians need to be a bit more honest when doing these dvd reviews. |

Sorry Dan, we all cant be perfect like you in live situations, I forgot as well that Joshua Jay was also named the bst card magician in the world (hes not).
Personally, I think he is great. Look at his age and how much he has achieved already. The 1man show is awesome, and you don't see a full clip of thw whole audience, so yopu cant say if it is big or not, I would say atleast 200 people were there. My only gripe was for the audience, that they might not have seen some of the card effects. And Joshua Jay isn't there to teach you Michael Ammars Ambitious card routine, its his routine on his DVD, just like Michaels is on his. I think there are lots of great and useful tips, and moves on the DVDs, the other magicians here are being honest. I think we all know Café members can really put a DVD down if they want to, but they havent on these, because the HONESTLY liked them |

I don't know if you noticed but there's not many reviews anyway (strange).I really think people are scared to say what they think.
I know Mr Jay isn't going to show the Ammar Ambitious card routine (doh)i was just stating that Michaels one is far better. This is teaching tape not just a performance so If you are going to teach a version of an effect improve it else leave it alone especialy when it's been done over and over. Do you remmember where the displacement move comes from? In order to fully realize how bad a popular play can be, it is necessary to see it twice. -- George Bernard Shaw |

I managed to watch vol.2 last night and I must say it's a big improvement. On the entertainment value it was great! briefly, Shrunken revelation was a nice idea on an old effect, his 3 coin routine I liked although I'm not into coin gaffs.(i might even purchace one.)and Inflated Transposition was a nice idea on a type of no TT bill switch you could say. Strangely enough I even liked his simple ending for the princess card trick so simple you just overlook these sort of card effects cause theres no ending and laymen seem to know of them. In fact I even liked the homing card effect old but great for a quick effect. Sorry I forget the name of the prediction effect with the cards and money but this was nice and could be done without the special setup. I like the simplistic thinking of this man, although he uses other peoples thoughts as well if you know what I mean. I would like to say that this vol.2 DVD is good value, however a small point I must mention it seems to cover a fair bit of other peoples effects, some dealer items, almost like it's a dealer demo with a twist.I think it should have included the stack he uses as this comes into play. You do really need to purchase extra items to perform a few of the effects. Some you can make up yourself. Buy IT !!! I am looking forward to watching vol.3 as I am a big fan of triumph card effects and have not found anyone to top the Zelini version yet. |

I know it has been said before, but as a 34 year old magician, who has been doing other peoples stuff for oh... at least 15 years, I need to say it again: This guy put out a book of his own stuff before he was 18, and has a three volume dvd set at the age of 23.
That has to say something about his creativity. And is it not still the rule of thumb that if you get one or two items from a DVD or a book that you will use (as it doesn't all fit our style) that it is worth the purchase? I will post my review when I recieve these in the mail. All I know is that I really like his book, and the fact that he has grown out of the red-suit (a "What was I thinking moment) shows he is willing to examine his character and his magic critcally. I for one still wear the Leather Zip-up Tie, and my Leg-Warmers. (If that ain't an image to make you cringe I don't know what is...) RevJohn |
