This topic is more for the average person who does magic occasionally but all are welcome to contribute to the list.
There are a lot of fakes, gaffs and gimmicks that look like common, everyday objects. While impromptu purists may not consider their use impromptu, spectators will see it as being just that. My Standards: - Looks like every day objects or are not seen. - Can be carried in pants pockets or concealed in a short sleeve, button down shirt. - No cards. So here is a list of some items with which I'm somewhat familiar: - Coin shells for coins people actually carry. included w/ some tricks below. - Bent coins. - Steel core coins. - "Dime and Penny" - "Spare Change" - non-locking dime & penny trick. - "Cigarette thru Quarter". - "Folding Quarter". - "Double X" - coin and pen. - Stack Of Quarters, nickles. - "Twenty One Cent Trick". - Magnetic coins. - "The Balancing Spinning Quarter". - "Link Key" - Bob Solari. - "TricTac" - quarter to Tic Tac box. - "Color Changing BIC" - lighter. - "Obedient Bill" aka self folding bill. - "Outsmokin'" - cigarette by Jaxon. - "Color Changing Knives": try to get ones that look like something real. - Thumb Tip or false finger. - Nail Writer. - Invisible Threads and loops. Care to add to the list?? Best, |

I'll repeat the criteria.
Looks like common, every day objects or are not seen. Can be carried in pants pockets or concealed in a short sleeve, button down shirt. No cards. Nothing to arouse even minor suspicion! Not sure all of these meet the criteria but hopefully this list will help others. If the gimmicks are half dollars I don't consider them looking like every day items. I should have word my standards better. Duh! miky: "Magician's Dream" by Fred Baumann. I saw Fred do this in person and it totally baffled me. Not many remember this thing. Thanks to all. Great list! |

Jaz,
You're right. "Magician's Dream" is a very effective and deceptive gimmick. It allows a complete, clean vanish in short sleeves, no jacket -- you could do it in your bathing suit. It's much more natural than the All-Round Vanish or Revolutionary Vanish. And, as you say, not that many know about or remember it. Here are some more gimmicks that have come to mind: Al Cohen's Blade Runner (knife through anything) Gimmicked finger rings (half-ring, Himber ring) Gimmicked pencil for Anti-Gravity Pencil -- I think Phil Goldstein had a good one, but I can't find where it's described -- can anyone give me a reference? Also there's a routine that uses a straight pin in the pencil -- again, I've forgotten the source. A great reaction if you do the well-known finger version, expose it for laughs, and then do this one. You can do both hands with palms open to the audience. Ring Flight's been mentioned -- I assume it refers to the reel versions. There are, of course, many non-reel versions: Dushek's Ringer, Bloom's Flying Ring, Ringkey Dinky among others. What about the coins in Coin Matrix 2003 -- just kidding!! |

Daff,
I'm not positive but I think it's still around but w/ a different name. There's also a product named "Magician's Dream" that is not the same. |

Not sure if these would fit your criteria but what about gimmicked rubberbands like Star Gazer, or the homemade ones used for some of Joe Reindfleisch's stuff, like smarty pans? Also misled should be on there I think!

In his book "Complete Illustrated Book of Close-Up Magic", Walter Gibson has a few interesting homemade gimmicks made from ordinary objects including
- "magnetic pencil" - matchbox fakes for vanishing the matches or making the match-heads switch ends The Psychokinetic pen has been mentioned, but there are other gimmicked pens that seem to move on their own such as the Pivot Pen and Penomenon. Another ordinary-looking gimmicked pen is John Cornelius's Bendable Pen. |

There are a number of ordinary-looking cups and beverage cans that are chop cups. Joe Stevens has a coffee mug chop cup, Hank Lee has a tea cup chop cup. According to some other posts in the Café, there is a line of chop pop and beer cans, although I have been unable to find them on the internet.
Also, there's the beer can you use in Larry Jennings' "Coin to Beer Can." There are also magnetic finger rings (MastRing, Omega Ring) that allow you to do chop cup routines with ordinary cups. |
