I would have been just as thrilled with the book however if I ended up with copy #382 or #426. For those who haven't seen it yet it is beautifully produced and contains knock-out coin magic. I haven't been this impressed with a book dealing with coin magic since Kaufman put out Expert Coin Magic and Coinmagic. If coin magic is your thing I can't imagine not owning this book. |

Thank you so much Mitch for the kind words. To be mentioned with those great coin books is an honor.
............... I just received a large shipment of CDs and mailers. I'm working on recording video clips for the CD. ............... If you're in the Cooperstown area, you can catch me performing at The Coachman Restaurant in Springfield off route 80. It's near the Glimmerglass Opera. I'll be doing strolling magic from 6-8 PM Saturday Oct 1. Cards, ropes, rings, sponges, and what did I forget...oh yeah coins. |

Hi Pachin,
Of the 11 original effects in the book, 10 are done stand-up. Most are suitable for strolling magic. I'm planning on using 3 of the effects this Saturday at the Coachman Restaurant (Boomerang Coins Ch. 17, Digestible Coins Ch. 19, and Lucky Chinese Coin, Ch. 21). None of the effects or sleights require sleeving, lapping, or any body work. The angles are also very good which is a plus when working in crowded venues. |

To bad I can't have the pleasure of reading your book Larry.
By all the things peoplesayd it must be a genuine masterpiece, but unfortunatelly I can't get hold of it for I live in Brazil, and the magic accessories here in my city are scarse to none!! Congratulations on your great achievement and may it bring the greatest success of your life!!!!!!

If any of the people who've had this book for a few weeks now could post some thoughts about the quality of the tricks that would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Shikina,
There are some more reviews of the book at: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......0&11 |

Thanks for the link, but the truth is that none of those reviews speak about the tricks themselves- just the moves. I'm sure your book is wonderful, but I just want a little confirmation about the routines themselves before I buy it.

Hey, is Dan reviewing the book on his Coin Vanish website? He usually reviews things like this, and does a pretty credible job with it too. Hey, maybe Larry could reciprocate and write a prescription, errrrrr I mean a review of Dan's latest work, "Coin Man Walking." That would be pretty novel.

Richard Kaufman asked me to send him a copy for review in Genii. I don't know yet when the review will appear in Genii. I don't have Dan's DVD yet but I plan on getting it. It sounds fantastic. Right now I'm concentrating on putting together a companion CD for my book and shipping books.

Larry,
Just wondering how all this works? You mean you have to actually ship out the books yourself...I mean like out of your house??? I would've thought that a publishing house would've done this. I thought you were associated such as the book looks like such high quality work. I didn't think you self-published, thus self-working the product. It's one thing to write the book, but another job entirely to be the shipping and handling. I'm sure it's all a labor of love, as it's gotta be quite a high to receive money for your book and then excitedly get it out to people that want it. I commend you on this, especially if you're one-man-ganging it. I've done worthwhile things like that before too - You just do it! I know Dan ships out his stuff, but it's also distributed by Kohler I believe. Will your book be available in bookstores, magic shops, etc.? Anyway, just trying to better understand here. Thanks.

Hey MB,
This is how it works. The magic book business is a niche market. Random House and Doubleday of course are not interested in publishing a book whose first edition is 550 copies. The magic book publishers are not interested in some magician they never heard of like me. They usually want the rights to the book and pay you a royalty. For those reasons and more we chose to do the book ourselves. My wife Esther and I created a publishing company called Gyromagnetic Press. We have a tax ID, ISBN number, bank account, and everything. Through that entity the book is published and copyrighted. We did all the photography and writing. We contracted with a graphic designer to help with the layout of the 315 b/w photos. We had another artist design the dustjacket and gold imprint. We chose the highest quality paper and binding for the book. I was contacted early by a company that you all know to distribute the book, but the terms were not favorable so we decided to do it ourselves. It's actually been fun and a great way of getting feedback as well as networking with other magicians. Because I (Esther too) ship the books I am able to sign them when requested. I can also include with the book for the Magic Café members a dollar size Chinese coin as a small gift. Since August 15, we've shipped books to Canada, England, Portugal, Spain, Netherlands, and Sweden. I've answered countless emails and PMs regarding the book for people who were buying it and from those who wanted some additional advice on the sleights. We could have had our printer in Michigan distribute the books but then we would lose control of the product. I actually leaf through each book to make sure there are no stuck pages etc. I have a small pile of books that I consider rejects (minor defect) that I won't ship. The book will not be available from magic dealers. You can only get it through me directly. We decided to pay for our own advertising. Currently I have a banner on the Café and I'm running a 1/4 page color ad in Genii each month. That has worked out very well for us. I have really gratified by the response to the book including the working pros who have ordered the book. Well, that's the inside story. Larry |

Thanks Larry, very interesting stuff...and like I said, all kudos to you and your one man (and woman) - gang production. The overall quality and supervision you have put into this is to be applauded. Hey man, if it means anything, I'm very proud of you (and the good Lady Esther, too). Continued success. -Marion

Thanks Oliver and Marion for your words of support.
I just did a 2 hour gig at a local restaurant last night. I prefer to work with no gimmicks when possible. People really responded well to Boomerang Coins and the kids especially liked Digestible Coins. There is a effect I did last night with a cord and finger ring which is a visible mindblowing penetration. I mention it because it uses my Flying Changeover Palm (a sleight taught in my book) with a ring instead of a coin. I may release that in the future. Well, back to working on those video clips. Will there be a companion CD with book?

Hi Coinman,
Yes there will be a companion CD. I'm working on a CD of MPG video clips to go with the book that will show how the sleights and some routines should look to the audience. This will not explain how to do the moves. It will be sold only to prior and current purchasers of my book for a nominal amount (my cost of media and postage). I will make an announcement when the CD is available. |

UPDATE:
The companion CD of video clips is almost complete. It consists of MPEG clips of the sleights from the first 14 chapters of 21st Century Coin Mechanics. There will be some additional performance clips included. When the CD is actually ready to be shipped, I will make one more announcement regarding price and ordering instructions. Thanks again for your interest. Larry |
