I use Ammar's version (Red Hot Mama) of Chicago Opener and find it a peach for hospital magic but not an ideal trick for table hopping or a gig that requires quick reset. It's not quite a closer and you don't want to reset this before you bring out your closer or set up your contrasting card prior to a new performance as it ruins the surprise of the color change. It's just not a quick reset.
So I don't use this gem for table hopping but since it's such a strong effect with such visual surprise, I want to tweak it to add it back into my routine in one form or another but it has to reset in a quick fashion. I'm playing with Sankey's Not This Card! version of Chicago Opener and I like the premise of the routine and interaction but there's borderline too much double undercutting in between phases if you know the routine. It's not as clean as Red Hot Mama but may be a table hopping worker if the dupe of the "not this card" is CS'd to be located quickly with a quick cut. If you're table hopping and using Chicago Opener or a version of this powerful trick, then what are you using/doing and how are you resetting? As always, thanks in advance. |

I use it to clean up my color changing triump trick.
basically I tell them if I can change a deck from red to blue, I shall be able to change it back to red right? of course, you already have an extra red card in the deck --- proceed to Red Hot Mamma to finish.

It's very easy. Use the effect as an opener. Leave the red backed card on the table through the rest of your time there. At the end of your card set find the match, and just reset it. People don't know what you're doing nor should they care as long as you've entertained them and are having fun with them. I use this all the time while table hopping.

Hi Mike,
Refer to my routine, "Here, There, and Chicago, Too" from my In the Trenches DVD. I set up for the Chicago Opener portion of the routine covered by a slight body turn and a covering line. "Take a card, please. Show it to everyone! I won't peek--Hey! I am cheating over here." As I load the card. This allows me to do the trick at anytime in my set. The reset is just putting the odd-backed card away. ready for the next presentation. Enjoy the search, Regards, Paul Green |

Hey Paul it's nice to see you around! Thanks again for the extra paddles, Bob gave them to me just recently! You really are a great guy. Hope to see you again sometime soon.

This is part of my standard set and the very effect that I use as an opening for any restaurant guest that I have never performed for in the past. I start with the cards in the box set up and ready to go. False shuffle, False cut, False cut (while talking to the audience) go into the effect. As mentioned above the card is left on the table throughout the remainder of my time at the table, when done I pick it up and act as if I am dropping it into my jacket pocket but the card is palmed and placed back on the bottom of the deck as I am replacing the cards back in the box. This leaves me set and ready for the next table. I will often change out the odd colored card some time during the evening as I have had requests to “do that one again for my friend”, and I always do it in the hands and never on the table.

Chicago Surprise can be done impromptu at any time in the set.

I have used Paul's approach ever since I first heard him suggest it. The direction/misdirection is stengthned by the fact I right before I offer them a card selection lay a Micky Hades finger chopper or the Vienna Magic clear chopper (both are examinable) on the table. Between the selected card and the finger chopper no one is paying attention to me. I don't make any fuss about the finger chopper and just hope someone picks it up. My next line turning around to the table is, "It was the best of tricks, it was the worst of tricks." and we're off into a tale of the French Revolition. (No, that isn't a card move.)
