I have 50% of this effect; the bag. It is a top notch, high quality net bag, highly recommended. It is sold separately by the same company and, I think, I got mine from Paul Hallas a couple of years ago for around £30.

Rhode Island Novelty sells wood puzzles of animals and birds by the dozen for $2 each. So if you pay $24 for puzzles and buy a good bag, like Jason Palter's "Use the Force" bag ($30), you have a $250 trick. . . I just got the wood eagle puzzle with wood frame and I think it's going to be great for my kids' show. I only bought 12, and the puzzle has 23 pieces, but who's gonna know . . .

Do you have a direct link? I couldn't find it on their site.

Like Bonnie Raitt said, "I miss Little Feat more than I miss being 8 years old." Thanks for the concerts + recordings, Lowell, Richie, and Paul!

Wow, Memblemore, that's great. Plese post if you uncover any more of these wooden puzzles. I am in Canada and will start searching here. A small sized version of the puzzle effect would be great. I was interested in Curt's puzzle but, in the end, concluded that it was just too big. A smaller version(and already framed no less) would be super.

I've searched other sites like http://www.puzzlesusa.com/cgi-bin/category/558 and also wholesalers like Loftus, and found nothing close to RIN, where in addition to the eagle, they have cheetahs, giraffes, wolves, moose, etc. Try this link and scroll down to see the $2 ones, which list "25 pieces" on front . . .
http://rinovelty.com/index.cfm?fuseactio......zzle&Go= Sometimes the pieces are a little stuck together, but they are real wood, and any breakage is from splintering on the bottom, which doesn't affect the puzzle "face." And for the money, there is absolutely nothing close (at least not from what I could find). If anyone has any handling or routining tips for "milking" this, could you PM me? I think the basics are obvious, but I'm looking for gags/bits o business, etc. to make this a little more magical. Thanks, Todd |

This also seemingly has the advantage that you can switch the missing piece for repeat performances. Is that the sole advantage of ML2? Also, I got the eagle figuring it was good for kid shows and 4th of July/Presidents' Day shows. But I do wish there was a Dora, Rudolph or Superman puzzle for cheap. Anyone located other wood puzzles in the same price range?

Hey Mumblemore,
Have your actually ordered these puzzles yet from Rode Island Novelty. I went to their site and attempted to order the 12 puzzles/$24 and to get a shipping quote but a message came on saying that an online order had to be at least $50. |

I did order them, and have them in possession. However, I did order with other items (some Barrels of Slime for Cellulator and some felt birthday candle hats or chicken hats for homemade Super Chicken). I never had to deal with the minimum order issue, but suppose that could be an issue. Sorry about that, but check out their site, which is quite expansive. The puzzles are really good, but maybe not good enough to get 25 of them . . .

Yeah...that was my experience. I could not find enough identical quality LARGE puzzles to recreate the effect and found that the marketed Mona Lisa effect was indeed kinda properly priced so I bought it a couple of years ago.
I like the effect. I remember seeing Kreskin do a variation of it on a morning chat show many many years ago. |

I'd still say it's worth it to make your own. But you may have to buy other items from RIN to reach $50, there'll be a $10 shipping charge or so (puzzles are solid plywood and heavy), and you'll have to get a good force bag (like Palter's - $30) or a change bag - $20. So you're talking $90 or $100, but you're still saving $50 or $100, and for that price you can get two puzzles ($24 per dozen) with reset pieces.

If a couple of people split an order, you can shave $30 off the $100 . . .

Or you can visit Hocus Pocus and search for "puzzle set" to find a 23" x 31" puzzle set for $79.95 with a routine that doesn't require a f*****g bag.

Curt, Jezz. No need to get testy about it (LOL). That is a funny and opportune "asterisking" job. Oh well, no use forcing the grammar. Thanks for the tip. I also saw the puzzle set you sell which looks like it may be a bargain as it would cost about the same as my "homemade" solution, but also no doubt comes with a good professional routine. . .

And indeed, the set at Hocus Pocus looks like yours. Any chance you'll sell me or send some of the routine (without the asterisks)? I have all these eagle puzzle pieces, and have to do the f*****g thing with them as I don't know how else to accomplish the trick. But I'm a newbie to mentalism (enjoying it, but still quite new).

The routine I include, with permission, is Lee Earle's "Puzzling Perception." You can find it in Syzygy: The First Five Years or ask Lee if he'll sell it to you straight up. You can contact him through http://www.mentalismunlimited.com .
