Sh4de by Daniel Garcia (DVD)
A review by Milamber Price - $15 (only sold at dgarciaproductions.com) Skill Level - Intermediate In a nutshell - An impromptu three-phase, bare-handed assembly using only four coins with a standard assembly; a backfire; and an instant assembly. In short, this is a very cool routine that you want to consider adding to your arsenal. The Review - This is truly a magical routine that I think every close-up magician should have. Daniel Garcia demonstrates, with the use of misdirection, how you can fool an audience with his shadow coin routine without the use of gimmicked coins. All you use is just four coins of any kind… For what it’s worth, I have done this routine impromptu with quarters, half-dollars, even sugar packets and bottle caps! One of the best things about Sh4de is that the method is completely clean. It starts clean and it ends clean, and there’s nothing to conceal or ditch after the routine has been performed. It also gives you an effect that is close to the same visual effect as any shadow coin / chink-a-chink routine. The standard assembly is extremely visual and includes a backfire ending where all four coins jump back to their corners all at once. This routine also has a flash four appearance where all 4 coins all jump to one corner instantly (in other words an instant assembly). The routine itself is not extremely difficult, especially if you've already worked with other shadow coin routines. It does not have any overly difficult sleights, however the most challenging part of this routine is the timing and the positioning during the performance. You can do this on almost any surface (although a softer surface is better unless you have some background noise), but there is one sleight used during the instant assembly, which will require a surface that has some ‘give’. The potential downsides to this routine is that it needs to be performed at a slightly faster pace than a regular shadow coins routine (in my opinion) due to some of the positioning involved. It will also take a lot of practice due to the timing involved, which is a good thing since the Average Joe probably won’t take the time needed to perfect this routine. This routine looks very magical in Daniel’s hands… although I wonder how long it will take for someone to be as smooth as him. Having said that, it is a lot of fun to practice and play with and the laymen I have shown this to have all loved this routine. Some people may balk at spending $15 on a single effect, but let me assure you that if you like coin work (or impromptu magic) this DVD is definitely worth it. If you are familiar with Daniel Garcia’s other offerings you know that he offers very precise teaching. He breaks everything down very slowly and thoroughly. I didn’t feel like I was left behind, which is something I’ve felt on occasion with other DVD’s involving coin work. I feel that for this great ‘secret’, the thorough explanations, and the great overall quality of this routine and DVD, Sh4de is sold for an incredibly reasonable price. Pros: - Completely impromptu with no gimmicked coins - A high impact routine (particularly with laymen) - Another Daniel Garcia product - Great teaching - Very reasonable price Cons: - Angle sensitive - Requires a lot of practice (to work out some of the awkward movements) - Must have the proper ‘setting’ (a forgiving surface / table etc.) My Score: The effect – 8 of 10 Impromptu – 10 of 10 Impact – 8 of 10 Teaching – 9 of 10 Overall – 8.75 This routine is a heck of a lot of fun to play with, knowing that you are completely clean throughout the routine. It is a very well thought out routine and the movements flow together very smoothly. This is a routine that I’m proud to add to my impromptu arsenal. The best thing about it is that you can start this routine off by borrowing the coins, and once you’re finished you can give the coins back... FYI, Only Four, the shadow coins routine featured on Daniel Garcia Project vol. 2, is not the same as Sh4de. It is a much shorter routine that can be complemented to your Sh4de routine. So, if you liked Only Four and want to learn more, I highly recommend you get Sh4de. Hope you enjoyed this review. Steve P.S. I never give a perfect score of '10' as I think it's absolutely impossible to achieve a "perfect product"... |

Perhaps I should have put this review in the "Tricks & Effects" section...?

Thanks for the review Milamber! Actually, I think since this is a dvd, you are essentially reviewing the routine found within the dvd.

Thanks Milamber. I had been considering getting Sh4de for a while as I have Dan's other DVD's (well just waiting for Vol 2)and you've just sealed it for me. Just have to get my local magic shop to get it in so I don't have to pay postage!

I, too, have been thinking about getting this dvd. Then I stopped when I ordered Danny's Project dvds surmising that Only Four is essentially the same as Sh4de. Thanks for making that clear, Milamber. And thank you for the great review, Milamber.

Thanks for the kudos everybody.
And I agree with cfrancis that it is a lot of fun to practice. I'm working on a few more reviews (including review of other Daniel Garcia products) and hope to have them posted when I get back (from a business trip to Korea and Japan) in a couple of weeks. All the best, Steve |

Just a thought guys, if any of you have hit the road dvd with paul wilson and lee asher...check out dean dills effect...very similar moves to daniels. Not saying anything bad against daniel or dean. But similar in concept although daniel did take his further.

Thanks for the recomendation. I don't buy a lot of coin magic, but I've been practicing this and it looks good when I video tape it. How do you guys present it?
I talk about how I practice magic at home, and the next trick is just an 'exercise' that I do when practicing. |
