For those of you who are interested in the Ron Bauer Private Studies series but have not purchased any of the booklets, perhaps this sampling of FREE Ron Bauer material available at various places on the Internet will whet your appetite.
Available on Steven Youell’s Cogitations Website are several FREE Ron Bauer articles. “Is This a Good Trick?” is a three part series about considering the EFFECT of a magic trick versus the METHOD. The first two parts were written to provoke cogitation about the EFFECT of “Good Trick.” The third explains the METHOD. Hidden within are important magic principles. A biggie is CONFLICT. “Good Trick” teaches how to add CONFLICT to a card trick. Also available for free on Cogitations are RB’s “T. T. T.” (a tell-free technique for showing two cards as one), “The Lie Detector” (without a doubt THE BEST “Lie Speller” trick in existence), and “Colorful Magic” (an article discussing colors in magic, from your close-up pad to your cards). “CENT-sitivity!” is available free on Dan Turcotte’s You Do Magic. It is not only a unique handling for the Copper/Silver Transposition with a penny and a silver dollar, but it’s surely the most startling way of presenting it. There seems to be no trickery because the misdirection for switching one coin for another is integrated into the easy to follow presentation. There’s also a ton of material available on the Ron Bauer Private Studies Website. “Silver Replacement” solves all the problems with Dr. Boris Zola’s “Silver Extraction” and is strong, visual magic. “Lots o’ Lock” is the first trick in the legendary “Key Ring Cycle,” a complete close-up act centering on a key ring with three keys and a small skull. “The Hoppy” is also from the “Key Ring Cycle,” and is a version of “Hen” Fetsch’s “Hoppy, The Magic Frog” that will make audiences LOVE you! “The Jellis Ring” puts the Ellis Ring to use in an amazing way. “Instant Lunch” is a dressed up version of the “E-Z Hat Loader” in which you produce an entire meal from a borrowed hat. Don Alan and RB were very good friends for many years. A few years ago, RB wrote up Don Alan’s treatment of the “Devano Deck,” using several videos of Don’s performance as guides. RB would rather not make any money off his best friend, so he put “Don Alan’s Devano Card Rise” on the Think Like a Conjurer Website. If you hunt around on the site, you can find “Don Alan’s Stanley” for free too. All of this material is available for FREE on the Internet, thanks to Ron Bauer. http://www.cogitations.net/ http://www.youdomagic.com/ http://www.thinklikeaconjurer.com/ Hint: On the Think Like a Conjurer Website, you may have to hunt a bit to find the information. Some of the articles are in Dowdy’s Inside Info, while others are in the archives for The Underground Connection, an online newsletter John Dowdy used to put out. |

Cameron:
Thanks very much for the info. One question: I was unable to find the Lie Detector trick on the Cogitations website. Has it been removed, or do you have an alternative link for it? |

Phaedrus,
“The Lie Detector” was renamed “Hofzinser’s Only Theory” on Cogitations. |
