Most of my most succesfull material was derived from the things I learned from my early performances, and god they were, well lets just say not good. An audience will teach you more in the first five minutes then you will ever learn anywhere else. Things like timing and your pace can't be learned in front of the mirror. You only learn by doing.

WOW. Ususally when I have had a bad show, it has very little to do with the tricks. My personal critisism is how well I connected with the audience. Believe it or not, you could still have a bad show even when all your tricks work perfectly. If anything, some of my best shows have been when I goofed a trick. It is the recoverey that matters. Now I rarely ever goof, but when I do, I use it to my advantage. Do not base your show on how well the tricks go. Learn to recover. If the audience has a good time, you did your job well. Those little gremlins will always creep in there, I don't care who you are.

My actual "first" performances were for my Boy Scout troop at Yawgoo Summer Camp. The first one went so well that the troop next door asked if I'd do one for them. That one went over so well everybody started talking about my doing the Talent Show at the end of the week.
As Arnold says in "The Last Action Hero" 'Big mistake!' All the things that worked so well in a small setting of 20 or so were completely lost on that big stage. And the things that should have worked size wise, just got screwed up! Never forgotted that show!

I've seen arrogant magicians with incredible skill not begin to win an audience over and seen green magicians steal an audiences heart with graciousness and humility. Sounds like you did great first time out of the gate so I'm thinking you are the latter for now. You sound like your attitude will take you a long way. I'm starting all over again and am months away from my first "real performance". I envy you. Keep up the great work!
