I just saw a report on the weather channel ... due to the price of gas, the airlines are trying to save money. One airline is installing lighter seats ... another is emptying the toilet tanks after each flight (instead of after several stops). And blah blah blah ... now gee, you'd think they would have been doing this stuff all along!!!
As much as I don't like the price of gas, it is painfully obvious to me that in order to conserve and get some real inovation on alternative energy ... well, I think gas is still to cheap! There should be an energy tax on each galloon of gasoline, and that money should be used to fund research on alternative energy. It just drives me nuts that the US would fund a war against itself by buying gas from its enemies ... especially when there are soooo many things we could do to conserve energy. Like remote control batteries - why don't remote controls have solar panels on them like caculators do? Duh! So am I the only one that feels we need to apply economic pressure to jumpstart the switch to alternative energy??? JoeJoe

We can do a lot better. We are a lot smarter. We DON'T need fossil fuels to sustain ourselves. The problem is that we (as a collective) fear change. I can think of many reasons why we should evolve, but the main one is that
We Don't Need Fossil Fuels! But, and a bit "but", if we didn't spend our money on gas, what would we spend it on?
Will you walk into my parlour? said the Spider to the Fly,
Tis the prettiest little parlour that ever you did spy; The way into my parlour is up a winding stair, And I've a many curious things to show when you are there. Oh no, no, said the little Fly, to ask me is in vain, For who goes up your winding stair -can ne'er come down again. |

Someone needs to put up a $$$$ prize for the best woking Full Size SUV or truck running on alternative fuels. Then they need to compete againest gas powered Trucks and BEAT them not just in gas mielage, but in all areas of performance.
If they have a contest like they did for the X prize then companies will be willing to invest the money for research. I am not willing to give up my SUV, which I need for work, to get a worse performing vehicle. |

I didn't know these countries are our enemies How many of the 9/11 terrorists were from Saudi Arabia again? Where does Bin Laden come from? Do you honestly believe the crown prince is our "ally" in the war on terror? The money that ends up in Saudi Arabia gets laundered and funneled into terrorist organizations, the CIA knows and admits this. JoeJoe

Here is a story on that:
http://www.usnews.com/usnews/news/articl......rror.htm Quote:
Al Qaeda, says William Wechsler, the task force director, was "a constant fundraising machine." And where did it raise most of those funds? The evidence was indisputable: Saudi Arabia. America's longtime ally and the world's largest oil producer had somehow become, as a senior Treasury Department official put it, "the epicenter" of terrorist financing. This didn't come entirely as a surprise to intelligence specialists. JoeJoe

We have citizens that commit murder in other countries that you and I disaprove of, does that make that country our enemy because someone else hates them. But it doesn't change the fact that everytime we buy oil from the crown prince, he allows that money to be funneled into the hands of terrorists, who are using that money against us - we are funding a war against ourselfs with no real effort to change anything. You would think that the airlines would have installed lighter seats years ago, but they wait until the price of gas goes up to do so. that's just not right. You would think they would have taken such steps after terrorists stole their planes and crashed them into a building. As a country, we should all be doing everything we can to conserve energy at every level until an alternative source can be found. By reducing the energy we use, we reduce the funds that the terrorists have to work with. If we stopped buying oil from Saudi Arabia (ie: economic santions), I don't doubt the crown prince would put forth a real effort to stop the illegal money laundering going on in his country. JoeJoe

One would also think that we Americans would have wised up after the 70's & 90's crises...and yet we saw a stunning and in-your-face record-setting increase in the number of gas-guzzling personal land yachts (AKA SUVs, Hummers, Motor Homes, etc) crowding our highways and parking lots. We are our own worse enemy! By the way...I don't think lighter planes would have caused less damage on 9/11. Rather a faulty argument, there, what? Quote:

Not necessarily...China has become a major competitor for our external oil sources. As a communist country with limitles manpower and ever increasing economic strength, they have the means to easily outbid us. Seems to me that what oil these countries don't sell to us will simply be diverted to the one true threat that we still face...and at higher profit. Our immediate future depends on becoming more self-sufficient in oil supply and reserves and less dependent on external sources. Our long-term survival depends upon developing alternate, safe and renewable energy sources that ween us off of this gluttonous dependency to oil. I agree with conserving. I lived in Europe for 12 years and rarely had to rely on my car to get from point "A" to point "B". The European system of mass transit trains, trollies, buses and taxis is simply incredible, affordable and so easy to use. Incontrast, the vast majority of the U.S. is spread out and wide open. We've become far too dependent on our individual cars for daily transportation. Solution? Ya got me! I can only take care of me and my small, insignificant corner of the world.

They are installing lighter seats because the less weight the less fuel is used, thus they are saving money by conserving fuel ... but they are only doing ths because of the rising cost of fuel, nevermind they have been operating in bankruptcy for years now. They could have done this a long time ago to save money, which is what I am saying - they only way America is going to conserve energy is to raise the price of energy. We have the cheapest gasoline in the world, milk is more expensive than gas ... why heck, the cost of bottled water at a gas station is more than a gallon of gas! JoeJoe

Everybody here is whining about the price of gas and I'm not saying you should or shouldn't but there are a thousand ways we can conserve energy but we choose not too. We use gas for everything these days.
Skip Way is right too, I just came back from China a month ago, I couldn't believe how many cars they have now. And if you want to talk about polluting the enviroment all you enviromentalist should be yelling at china, I never seen so much pollution in my life. And JoeJoe you're picking one country out of the sources we get our oil. I do agree with you saudi arabia isn't are perfect ally but we accidently funnel money into terrorism too. I made a lot a friends when I was in Saudi (there's good and bad in every country) |

Stop driving those d**n SUVs and get a car that gets decent mileage. And stop living so spread out. City dwellers who walk or take public transportation use less oil. Let's stop supporting terrorists and those who hate America.
Walking will also help us with America's weight problem as well. |
