The bar industry is tough over here

Many owners a sceptics of sales man- so when you offer that free night- they are sceptic.

On the other hand if you can get in because of a"cancelled GIG"

the bottom line is You gotta get your foot in the door.

Being polite means waiting for a small window for the next 10 years.

Good agencies- come up to you- they don't wait for you to call. and they cerainly don't look at your promo tapes when you cold send them.

well they don't look at mine anyway.

Are there any monthly children's news papers in your area? That's how I get started, in 1988 I did 10 shows.

THere are some- but they cost money- something a newbie probably doen't have experience writting.

plus Kids entertainment is different from bar work.

Also Kids entertainers are required to have a safety chech cost additional money plus insurance

and then customers want to pay $100

That's ten shows? I don't understand. Is that a typographical error?

Since July I've gotten about 40 shows from advertising in the parent's mag.

And that's my point

we pros can write good advertising- and that's because we have made mistakes in the past and have learn't - or we have done courses to learn it.

but a newby hasn't- they don't have the skills or knowledge we have

we gotta start looking at it from the Newbies point of view and not from someones who has a client list a mile long and a good reputation.

People say lying is bad

I remember hearing about a biography of- I'll tell you in a bit
he went to the studio's where they produce movies and found an office that was unocupied- he set up office there- and eventually became known to the produces that would frequent the studio.

He would start up conversations with them and talk about his ideas for a Movie

eventually one guy was interested and made a movie with him

His name is steven speilberg

and it all started from a lie
if it's good enough for him it's good enough for us.

You will be very surprised at how the super big companies resort to unsavory marketing tactics to get business

Just because they are big- doesn't mean they are honest

I was unintentionaly unclear. I did ten shows my first year, before I started to advertise in three childrens news papers. The second year I did considerably better but advertiseing absorbed all my profit. After 12 years of part time entertaining I was able to quit my day job and become a full time entertainer. I did not intend to tell the story of my life here, I just wanted to suggest the childrend publication as one place a start.

I have been doing kid's entertaining as a Clown/Magician for the past 7 years. I have NEVER had nor been asked about a safety check.

As for Performer's Liability Insurance I do have that and carry a copy with me at6 all times but have only been asked for it once. Every year when we renew I make copies of the certificate for all the restaurants I work at and they still ask me "What's this?"

AHH a POLICE check, I was thinking safety check. Yes I had the police dept of one community check me out when I advertized in the local paper. I use that as a sales tool that I am cleared by the police.

Tell them to try Florida! I'm not sure they have anyone in the audience young enough to qualify. LOL

Actually, I like the idea of having background checks. Perhaps doing that for elected officials Before the Election would be a good idea in the USA. On second thought, we have a reputation to live down to.

Frankly, I do worry about sharing dressing rooms etc. with acts and other venue employee carrying or dealing drugs. Guilt by association can be very damaging. It is one reason I often show up at the venue ready to go on stage. (Being law enforcement is no indication of character either. Locally we look forward to replacing our sheriff soon. Opportunities for outside crooks are very limited. He has a monopoly. LOL)

Good reputations are worth protecting.
