I might go with the vernet first if I like them, I'll up to the scarab, I've bought many products I thought would be great then I realize they just don't fit. I'll go after those first.
Heres my "list" of the orde I will buy in 1. Cups and Balls book $35 2. Vernet Shells $10 3. Scarab Shells-School for scoundrels DVD?) $75 4. Perfect Pea $15 Total $135 I could buy all of this now but if I don't like the shells I will not buy the shell related stuff. Could someone clarify if the "gimmick" on the scarab shells, I'm a bit cofused by the S4S page... Oh and by the way instead of mad duck you can call me CR

I can agree with you as well. I would suggest the perfect peas even if you do start with the Vernet shells. That will make things easier from the start. And I would avoid the ultra cheap stuff from the Arctic dwelling flightless bird.
I can relate to the guitar analogy as well. My first had a very high action and I had heavy strings. I could barely press the strings against the fret board. My hands used to ache just trying to from a single chord. There is certainly something to be said for having quality props. But you're looking at almost 10 times the cost difference. Yes, they are worth it, but if you are concerned about the cash outlay at first, you can still do a nice routine with the Vernets.

Don't worry. The Laymen site is out of my area by now, I do worry about cash becuase my only job is mowing lawns still of course with an additional $5 every week. The vernet shells might come first. My audince should be pleased with what the routine will turn into I think. They like the shell game, I just didn't have it for them. Shell Game, Cups and Balls, linking rings
Thank you! CR

Mad Duck (CR) the *gimmick* of the Scarab shells is what you do with them, not really any particular feature of the shell itself.
If it were up to me, a low cost "starter set" would be the Vernet shells, and the SfS DVD. I've heard the peas that come with the Vernets aren't that bad. If you want to spend even less, then buy a bag of walnuts and start experimenting. It's fun, and you get to eat your mistakes! Rather than get the Scarabs, I'd wait until you know what you want to do. The Scarabs are really more suited to a specific presentation rather than your "normal" shell game.

If you go with the cheaper shells, really look into the perfect peas by S4S. They are really perfect. I really struggled with the Vernet peas. Way too slippery.

I am not looking for a game but a presentation, I hope that answers your question

A great "Presentation" would be Bob Kohler's "Golden Shells" video. He uses shells (gold) rather than the Scarabs. I guess what I was getting at, was that people associate shells with the shell game. The Scarabs are a bit more... specialized... and requires a good explanation. Bob Sheets has a great routine, you'll see it on the SfS video, but most of us don't have the charisma of a Bob Sheets or Whit Haydn and might do better with a standard shell set.
Stick with the Vernet's until you know you like the concept. Buy the Perfect Peas if you can afford them. Then, you'll be ready to make an informed decision on where to go from there.

I agree with Dave. If you get the vernet shells (with the included peas) and the kohler video, that's enough for a while. Watch the video a few times and really listen to the psychology behind the routine. Don't try to practice it.
For starters, listen for how Bob decides which among the group of spectators he uses as the one to choose "where the pea is". This is extremely important and is the type of advice that is essential on a learning video. Then write down the phases. You'll see that there are not too many. practice it 25 times by yourself. practice it for your friends a bunch. You'll be set. Then you can spend the money on some shells you'll be proud of. All the better shell sets come with the perfect peas. but I must say, those vernet peas are pretty darn good these days. I still use the perfect peas. If you want to know more, PM me.

If money's tight, START with the Scoundrels' DVD. START with the Scoundrels' DVD.
Three bottle caps and a piece of a sponge or a pencil eraser are enough to get you started for props, or the Vernet's if you're really itchin' to spend a couple bucks. Bob Kohler's routine is great, but when he developed it, he was working from a strong grasp of the basic sleights and psychology that he had already acquired. Work on the sleights, try to understand why things are done the way they are, and by the time you're getting comfortable with the moves, you'll have saved enough money to go out and make an educated prop purchase. |

To further complicate the issue...
Don't forget about Pat Page. He has a video that is geared toward the beginner. I have seen the video around $10 price range. |
