Hello there,
I have a friend who wants to sign up to the Café. BUt he is using a free email from yahoo. He got a message stating that free emails are blocked on this forum. Is there a reason for doing so? There are so many people using free emails such as yahoo or hotmail. WHy prevent them from entering the Café? THanks! |

My youngest son wanted to join recently, as he is interested in magic. He was disheartened and I was shocked that he was not allowed in because he doesn't have money to be able to afford an email account other than the free one.

I can assure you there are very valid reasons for it, but I'm not going to explain them here.
Suffice to say if you ever run your own board of this size, you may eventually decide to do the very same thing, perhaps even for the very same reasons. Even if you didn't, you'd clearly understand why it's being done here.
Somebody kick me off the computer, will ya?

Gene, I don't mean to be disrespectful, or even contrary, but I don't think I'd ever block some one from coming on board on the basis of their being poor.
Case in point? My son.

It has nothing to do with blocking poor people, but if that's your view then I won't argue with it. However, if you take a step back for a moment and try to view the overall picture of accepting free emails, you may come to understand.

Sorry Gene but I still do not understand. Is it to limit the capacity of the forum? Is it to appease certain sponsors?
I believe a forum should always be open to those who have genuine interest. Blocking free emails will result in many who are keen but unable to join. Not everyone uses the email his ISP provides, and even if he does enter the forum, someone who wants to email him may not be able to reach him. Please provide an explanation. If you're not comfortable posting it publicly could you PM me please? Thank you. |

It's not a question of being comfortable, it's a matter of it not being my business to divulge. I've dropped hints as best I could without coming right out and explaining, but I'm sure anybody who's been here for a while might have a very good idea why. However, if the boss ever decides to allow me to explain it in detail, I will.

I personally believe you guys shouldn't block free emails, I know the reason you are but it's not worth keeping a bunch of magicians locked out because of some people.
Please consider changing this. |

I agree, and we have. Your comment is right on the mark, but I'm afraid there's not a whole lot we can do these days.

Try talking to Steve, your communication with him is a lot better than most of us.
Or you could try asking him to use a type of invite method like Google's gmail. Maybe some members would be allowed to invite 1 or 2 people and be responsible for who they pick. It'll keep going and usually you'll have good members getting more good members who they trust. Just a thought - Allan |

No need for Gene to ask Steve, you just did.

I just found this topic, and I agree in theory. But I think there should be another look taken at it. As gmail seems to be taking over a lot of things, and rightly so. I have two websites, but why use those for my email, when gmail has 2 gigs of space, that I am not charged for, and more features than I could get on my webspace.
You could always have an address then have it forwarded. I just think gmail is apparently here to stay, and I would rather use their 2 gigs than mine. =) |

Apparently, the hints just haven't gotten through. There are other topics on this subject as well, just run a search. Again, I assure you all, we have a very understandable reason for doing that.
Locky locky ...
