I do a version of David Williamsons 2 cup routine table hopping. It does take up quite a bit of pocket space but you get quite a bit of entertainment out of it. So I don't need much more pocket space.

I forgot about this thread and just read the last comments. I still find it an interesting conversation.
Danndoyle, I don't think you're creating a controversy here. I think your observations are sound, though I also think you still are "missing" something (It is almost like those people who went to the Sixth Sense, after all the comotion, and said "well duh...I saw it coming all the way, big deal"). Have you ever seen the reactions, or hear people talk about a watch-steal? I would not compare Tommy's routine with a watch-steal routine, but the resemblance between the two is that both CAN be backtracked. Nevertheless I bet I do not have to point out the HUGE reaction a watch-steal gets. People can just not believe one can do such things right under their noses. BTW I do not perform Tommy's two-cups routine, neither do I do a watch-steal, but sometimes I can be jealous by the reactions other performers get when doing just that... Hey Simon, don't make me blush man. Twistedace, great that you've broken it into your repertoire. It takes guts to perform it! Stevie, I still do not get it. The pompom in tommys routine does never need to be near the backpocket. It is either on the table, attached to the bag or under a cup. Never at your back. Are we talking the same routine here? I think David Williamson's routine has spawned more two-cup routines for this generation of magicians than Ramsay, Wonder or Hofzinser. Mine is based in his. My two-cups and balls routine is my alltime favorite. I perform it strolling, formal close-up and stage. For stage I use vanDokkum jumbo's with balls and final loads enlarged as well. I've put more energy (and money) in my cups and balls than any other routine I perform. That's why I like this thread and this discussion...

The exact same routine yes. I was replying to the pocket management bit. metal in pom pom in cup sticks to earth magnet in back pocket. pocket managment minus the pocket

Do you mean you carry the whole rig (cups, balls and bag) stuck to your backpocket?
I may come over ignorant here, but I really do not see the use of the backpocket, with or without magnet, being applied to Tommys routine. One of the reasons this routine is considered special is that it does not require pockets or lapping. It can be done naked. (Dan just left his room to see if he can do his own routine naked.)

I love Tommy's routine. I worked on it for years until I could do it properly. in 1990 I flew up to Ohio to the Magifest just to see him do this routine.
It is beautiful and when he does it, it is very Magical. I personally don't have the Charisma and Personality to sell this as well as Tommy does. I eventually started changing it to fit my style and ended it with the production of fruit. It started as Tommy's routine and after 15 years it evolved into a totally different routine. One of the things I liked about the routine was the feeling it gave me to make the loads and steals so brazenly. About a year ago I decided to start working the streets and I had to learn a totally new routine (3 cups). You definately need the final loads on the streets, and I wanted to work out of a pouch, because of the heat here in Texas. The thing that is wonderful about Tommy's routine is that I can throw the whole thing in my lunch box and go to work (I build Power plants) and perform a wonderful cups and balls routine in regular work clothes; but the reaction of producing the large fruit at the end of a cups routine always gets a better reaction for me though. Dan I'd love to see your 2 cup routine sometime, I've heard good things about all your work. Ronnie |

For those who do Tommy's Routine, how do you find it for table space. Particularly the l*** when one ball rolls out of the cup and you have to catch it so as to not have it fall off the table. I have found that unless I have a decent amount of table space, this move just doesn't have the room to work properly.

Yes I agree, you need space for this one. I recently asked Tommy if he ever used this routine (or intended it to be) as a trick for restaurant or dinershows. The answer was no for those very reasons.
With some good rapport and at the right time (coffe or dessert?) it is not impossible to do. I also wait with my cups and balls for the moments the table is cleared a little bit.

If you're not doing this in restaurants you should be! It goes over wonderfully and I've never had a problem with table space.

Please share with us your strategies in handling table-space. This is the right forum for that!
