With Halloween being just around the corner, I figured it was about time to start thinking about fun ways to scare the kids. I'm way too old to go out Trick-or-Treating but I do stay at home with my wife and hand out candy to the neighborhood kids.
I'm looking for some ideas. Something fairly simple and fast that could be done over and over with little resetting. My initial plan is to dress up as some sort of zombie and after the kids get their "loot" I would do the "head off shoulders" illusion to give them a quick scare. There's a fellow up the street that places a "monster" in a chair outside his house a week or so prior, and switches out Halloween night so he can jump up at he kids, so that idea is out. Does anyone have any other ideas that might be fun? Keep in mind that I have a porch that has 5 steps leading up to it, so I don't want to scare the kids so bad that they run and fall off of the porch and get injured, and I'm thinking that the Head off Shoulders might be pushing it a little too far. Especially with the smaller ones. What do you guys think? |

I personally think - that if you have steps that the kids can fall down - after being scared out of their wits, it might be a better idea to do "the stunt" at the bottom of the steps. Especially becuse you Americans sue over ANYTHING !!! so probably not worth the risk!
As for stunts - Head chopper - or better still perform the wrist chopper that REALLY looks like you have cut your hand off - sword through neck - Flame to cane - HAVE FUN !!!! |

The web comes to mind. maybe pain, I believe its in the AoA series. or maybe even creation which is also in the A0A series, but maybe you could try it with a spider or something. Some stuff from Mac King book, tricks with your head might also apply. You could also try some sort of voodoo presentation. sorry if I am rambling, but I'm not really sure exactly what type of stuff you are looking for. pure scare tactics, or just eerie? I hope I was able to help at least a little.

I personally would go with Facelifter by andrew Mayne, or creature by keith lack (throw in a quick D lite act...it's done with the help of the...creature! something fun and funny just turned into something a bit spooky!) hope this helps!

I have developed a reputation in my neighborhood as "The Magic House", a must visit according to the kids. I've even had people move out of the neighborhood only to return on Halloween night to see the show again.
I keep the show short and simple with only two routines. The first routine is just for the sake of magic. It may even tie into the Halloween theme, like a Zombie Ball for a ghost or something similar. The second effect is to make their candy magically appear using something like a Dove Pan or Square Circle. This doesn't scare the kids, but they do find it very entertaining. The mysteries of magic tie in very well with the mysteries of Halloween. Make sure to give them a business card with their candy, it may just get you hired for a birthday party later in the year. I give out little glowsticks and am using Fearson's to float it as it goes into the first kid's bag.
I then use dlites to take the light "back out."

Two words. GET INSURANCE!!! lol. I do a haunted house every year for about 5 years now, and it is the biggest attraction around. Hundreds of people come and love it. My parents just sit around all night and do what they want, and we do the work, they love it! People comment to me all the time. Its really nice. But then there are the others who ignore you because they are too scared to come in. And Im not joking. The first year was great because people where comming in and out. But year after year they don't want to come in because I have a whack of people jump out at them, and sometimes they get scared and run away. We had one girl went hystericle and ran away crying, then we had to find her! But we get more comments then complaints. So give it a try, its really cool! By the way, I wouldnt do the head thing to really young kids. you don't want to ruin the night for them. -Cory.
