I'm sure that this topic features elsewhere in this particular area of the magic Café, but a few attempts at searching for it have not yielded what I am after.
I'd like to talk about the get-ready for the DL. It seems that many posters endorse the one handed double pushover as the method of choice. I have a problem with this, I can't do it! I'm not sure what my problem is. I have quite long narrow fingers, and to get my thumb over to the near edge of the deck to be able to push the cards is uncomfortable to say the least. It seems that whenever I do it without looking at my hand (which I think is important) I invariably end up with either 1 or 3 cards above the break. I'm quite successful at performing the snap double, but everyone seems to denigrate this move. So what I am asking for are creative suggestions on getting the break one-handed without using the push over. Steve |

whats the "strike double".
I'm also working on a pushover double and dislike my current attempts because I don't want to be staring at the deck making sure I have 2. I don't have it 100% yet. I'm also trying a modified version of the knockout double which has a quasi-get-ready. I push a single card over (and down) just a fraction of an inch. That's the get ready. At that point, the top outer edge of card 2 is visible. I "strike" that card at the tip and then do a stud type second from there. It's a lot easier than a push-over double, and it looks just like the knockout double, (if I'm not mistaken) which is considered one of the better double-lifts. It is also somewhat like the dingle double except for this one little practically non-existant get-ready. If you do the get-ready at almost the same time you "strike" it would look like there was no get-ready. I don't know if this double has an owner or a name or if it is on the Double-Take video but it is something to consider. It makes the move a lot more sure-fire. Let me know if you have some other reference for this. Frank

Hrmm, Alex Elmsley has a nice idea which involves letting the deck fall down as apposed to pull the cards up. Hard to grasp if you are used to pulling the cards up with your thumb.
Ken Krenzel has a brilliant double lift called the natural double lift, it has no get ready and is also easy to do, looks natural and has many other applications than just a double lift. the pinkie count is good though can be overkill for just a double. Euan |

I'm not sure why you would need to do the get ready one handed, but let's say that that is necessary to what you are doing. I have used the following for 30 years or so with great success. Hold the deck in the classic mechanics grip. Light, but firm. Make sure by the way that your Left thumb is moist enough to get good adhesion when doing the move. You are going to do a series of things all in a very close associated row:
1- With the L.Thumb begin pushing the top card to the right ANYWHERE along the left edge of the deck. Top card moves exposing the second card. 2- Move thumb slightly to contact second cardd also and push to right about 1/4 inch or so. 3- Set the L. Little Finger to take a L. Little Finger Break and push up on bottom of the top two cards as you PULL the cards back with the Left thumb while applying the upward pressure with the little finger. This action will cause you to take a L.L.Finger Break. 4- Here's the catch: You will cover this action by turning the L.H. palm down and then up during the above actions. I will leave it to anyone doing this to figure out what the timing is. You are now set to do many classic reverses. Also, by the by, with practice you can get breaks incredibly fast under 2, 3, 4, even 5 cards by using the same technique. I use this as the get ready for all the one-handed turnovers that I do, etc. But, it is a great invisible get ready for the Vernon, etc. Best, Brad Burt

I use the pinky count for my DL get ready. Getting a break under 2 cards in this fashion is very simple once you have mastered the pinky count.

Frank,
thanks for the tip about the knockout double. I have adopted it. Is'nt Bro. John Hamman's no get-ready double lift was for small packets only? |

Speaking of Double Lifts, the one I've been using for over twenty years is the one mentioned in Marlo in Spades. It can be used to lift from two to five cards in a single shot and there is no get ready. You just have to train your thumb nail and this should probably be considered a knack move. Marlo mentioned one time that he never saw anyone do this kind of double lift...but trust me with practice it is practical and natural.

The squeeze technique? I don't like it much, takes too long for me to do without making it look like I'm doing something.

you're right. The second part of the first item deals with small packets though and that the technique I remembered. I confess I use neither and it's probably my loss, but I've always felt uncomfortable pushing cards from the long side. |

Dark,
I like the get ready as in Expert Card Technique. Mainly because it feels better than than the technique I learnt in the RRTCM. I feel more certain I've secured a double rather than a triple.

Couple of quick points:
1. Lewis Jones has another approach in his new book, "Ahead of the Pack." It's a full-view spread of the cards, which enables you to get the break you need rather easily. 2. Harry Lorayne writes that there should not be a need for a break in a small packet; in many cases, a backspread will do the job for you. 3. One thing I do occasionally is to take the top card off the deck and flick it, drawing attention to it while getting a break under the card now at the top of the deck. Replace the removed card, and voila...you're set. (I'm told that's a Vernon move.) The key point I'd emphasize is not to make your DL look like your SL...but just the opposite: make your SL look like your DL! It's easier, it's consistent, and audiences will allow you some latitude to handle the cards a bit differently than they might. Good luck.
Cheers,
