I've got a problem with my webpage that maybe you web guys can help me with.
I've put lots of meta tags in there so people can find me when they search for my city and the word "magician." It works great if they are searching from the MSN website/search engine. I suspect this works on MSN because I created the website with MS Frontpage. However, on Google's and Yahoo's search engines, my website does not appear at all with those same search words. What gives? Is this indeed because I used Frontpage to create my site, and that Google can't read Frontpage metatags? If so, thank you Bill Gates. Jim
Oh, my friend we're older but no wiser, for in our hearts the dreams are still the same...

The problem is many people have abused meta tags. People have used meta tags to try to trick search engines into giving them better positions than they deserve, or in getting search engines to display their page with inappropriate searches. For example, people used to put their competitor's name over and over in their meta tags. This would make their site come up when people searched for the competition. For example, a few years ago I could have stuffed my meta tags with "David Blaine", and my site could appear first when people searched for "David Blaine".
As a result, search engines no longer trust webmasters to be honest in their meta tags, and most simply ignore meta tags. It's yet another case where a few "bad apples" have abused the system and messed things up for all of us. You need to make sure your keywords are used in the visible text of your document, and the title tag and image alt tags. It's especially beneficial to have your keywords in headings and link text. If you want more info, I'd recommend checking out webmaster forums, like http://www.webmasterworld.com. They'd be a better source for techno-geek info than a magic forum would be. |

You must fine tune your meta tags
similar to google adwords It is better to have a small amount of targeted Keywords than every keyword to do with the term magician. I can't see your web site but here are some tips. Make sure that your Title pages for your web site are what people type into google Don't have- a title such as The Amazing JamesinLA because people don't type that into google they would type Corporate Magician or Magicians in LA So your title would be LA's Leading Corporate Magician with emphasis on LA and magician. Also you may want to have a Site Map- this is a page directly off your Index page that has a link to every single page. You will also want about 200 words on your index page describing what you do Make sure the links on your site are actual key names so for example instaed of having "Shows" have the link "Corporate Magic Shows" Links should be HTML not flash links- many people make the mistake of making a Flash link with buttons that swirl when you mouse over- If you decide to do this simply have a bunch of HTML Links at the base of the page as search engines like google filter through your pages via HTML links what do I mean by HTML links- in front page type a work and then make it a hyperlink is in essence a Hyperlink Links to your web site- I have been reading that you can increase your rating by having approx 90-100 links to your web site- not an easy task but this is where you would get your associates to exchange links make sure that they are in the same line of business as you for example a function venue would be good but a flower shop would not be good so what Have I typed so far Title Pages Simplify your meta tags 10 to 12 word of what people actually type into google Links as HTML descriptive links Site Map get events industry companies to link to your site on meta tage creation these two links are to meta tag generators- just fill out and then copy and paste site into the Head section simple version http://javascript.internet.com/miscellaneous/meta-maker.html aslo check out advanced version http://javascript.internet.com/miscellan......tor.html which is very good. you are more than welcome to forward a link to your site to me and I'll check out if you need to change a few things |

I get ALOT of work from my website despite having no training in the web industry. Here is what I did....
1) Find as many RELEVANT free directories as possible and put your website on them. This will increase the number of links to your homepage from outside sources. Avoid random directories with no link. Google ignores them. type in Link:yourwebsiteaddress to see who links to you. 2) Don't ignore metatags - some of the auto-directories use them to create lists of relevant sites. 3) Make sure you content is relevant and includes the words people will search for. E.g. You should have the words MAGIC, MAGICIAN, MAGIC SHOW, MAGIC SHOWS, CORPORATE, ENTERTAINMENT, YOURCITY, YOUR SUBURB etc. Make sure you have every variation. E.g. I have kid's party, kid's parties, child's party etc as links 4) Put a clickable link in your magic Café signature to your site. See 1) for more info! 5) Use free submission sites. |

VERY IMPORTANT THO
if you post allot on the magic Café and you have a web link or any forum for that matter- don't winge or complain about not getting work because when people type your name into google- The magic Café will come up and they can read your negative post. I learn't this lesson early on on a local Small business forum- I complained about agents not looking at my work - and whenever you typed in my name into google it would come up number 1 and they would click it and read me post about not getting much work For the record I do get allot of work nowadays At the same time you can add semi fake advertsising posts to forums although The magic Café will probably delete it but most other forums don't have the policing policies and you can promote your self on the forum which will come up early on search engines |
