Hi I've been in magic for about 23 years and an Illusionist for the past 18 years or so. I've never chanced to buy the Tarbell amidst my huge collection of books. Do you think at this stage it would still help to buy the Tarbell course set? Does it have many unique things in it to learn from?

Plainman007,
That's like a preacher asking if he should invest in a Bible! It's an awesome source of info that should be in every magicians library. I've been in magic for 34 years and still refer to my Tarbells on ocassion! Lyndel |

I would agree, there is a lot of information in Tarbell for any level performer. When my back went out, I unfortunatly was forced to sell mine.

There would be no reason in my mind to not buy the Tarbell course. If you could master a tenth of the material in that course you would be one of the best and most educated magicians in the world. The Tarbell course is a plethora of information and I see no reason why anyone would discourage you from it. Whenever I see any new trick I immediately go to my Tarbell course and more often than not it is in Tabell in one form or another. Buy it.

I don't care if you are 3 year old Charlie down the street who is a klutz or David Copperfield. If you are a magician, you NEED Tarbell...

Not having Tarbell:
It's like being a fire fighter and not owning "Essentials of Firefighting" It's like being a priest or minister and not owning a bible. It's like calling yourself a children's entertainer and not heard of David Ginn. ------------------ Do you need it? No But I couldn't see me calling myself a Magician and not owning it.

Not only are the illusions (which are limited granted) still very workable, but there are tons of good workable routines that are a necessity in a touring, working illusion show. You need those routines to fill in spots.
It has been said before and I will say it again. ..You could make a living with the magic in Tarbell and many performers have. Richard

Tarbell is a rich and rewarding set of books to own and should be an essential part of a complete library. Having said that, do I think you should put your hard earned cash out to buy a set? Depends - for completeness I would say yes definitely. As far as things you have to know and can't live without - probably if you've gotten along this long without a set, your need is not great.
There is a suggestion for a great illusion somewhere in the set using the dollhouse method that involves a slot machine. I've always thought it could be a great illusion especially if professionally built with the electronic bells and whistles of an actual Vegas one armed bandit. It is an "original" illusion, just waiting for someone to build. Curious? Now you've got a reason to buy the set. Frank Tougas

Not only does Tarbell cover tricks and routines, some of the lessons are about showmanship, publicity, etc. Also useful tools for performers.

I've only been in magic 44 years and 47 years in the professional entertainment industry. However, I still look at Tarbell about once a week. Mine is not for sale yet. I still need it.
Facts are that there is not much new in magic but the magicians. Bob Magic By Sander |

If you must buy them new, buy them all at once in a set. You will find you get a better price usually.

Most of the information, if not all, in Tarbell is probably already in the collection of books you own. Tarbell for you may be more a matter of historical significance.

When I was a wee lad. I fell madly in love with MAGIC. The first book I ever checked out of the library was a book about magic, I tried to learn very trick I could.
No I’m not so old that I had to walk to and from school, up hill both ways, but we knew mommy wasn’t wouldn’t drive us everywhere. If we wanted to go, we had two feet. But when mom did drive us it was fun because we got to ride in the rumble seat! What, you don’t know what a rum..... Ask an old guy. Any way I walk to another town to see my first live Magic Show. The Magician was Mr. Nelson. I don’t remember his first name. Back in those days kids didn’t address adults by their first name, but his brother was Robert Nelson the well known purveyor of mentalist supplies. After the show I waited outside to meet, and let him know I was a fellow conjurer. He was kind enough to watch me perform the little tricks I had stuffed in my jeans pockets, and even invited me to his house for a visit. Mom drove me to see him (the rumble seat) where we talked magic. I had saved my allowance for doing my chores, and mt Birthday money. He took us to Hollywood to the magic store. There before me stood this emporium of bright lights and huge windows filled with strange, and wonderful stuff. Secret stuff, real magicians stuff. I had arrived. Well, not really Mr. Nelson pulled me a way from this magic heaven, Hollywood Magic to a small door next to heaven. Then up a long flight of stairs arriving at large dark, dusty room filled with props, books, and men setting around playing cards, and tricking one another. Those men I grew to know Harry Blackstone Sr., Kuta Bux, Okito and others who always had time to watch my magic. Never telling how bad I was, but showed ways to make it better. Not just show me more explaining why it made it better. I haven’t thought about that time in years. Even now I can almost smell the dust & cigar smoke. The store wasn’t in any particular order, but ask Mr. Berg (Joe Berg) and like magic it appeared in his hands. That first time at Berg Magic I pulled out my savings, put it on the counter, and asked what miracles I could buy with it. The old man smiled and asked if I wanted to be a real magician. Almost screaming yes, he placed a copy of Tarbell vol. one in my hand, and a thumb tip. He gave me back my change, and said when I could do five, or six of the tricks to come back. I did every chance I could until I had the first seven volumes of Tabell. I later got to study with Marion Chavez at her studio where she help polish my performance. It’s been over fifty years since I became a student of the magical arts, and when ever I start to learn a new routine, I go to my well read Tabell’s to study all the similar lessons are taught there, and gobble up all the pearls I find. I believe that a magician should strive to open minds, and plant seeds of possibilities within their audience, if but for a moment, that they might learn to see the real magick that surrounds each and everyone of us everyday! The greatest thing about magic is not the mysteries we learn, but the friendships we conjure a long the way. ............................... Manyfingers |
