So I was just reading some posts and I realized that many members relate the number of posts a person has, to their knowlegde of the art.
Sadly, I also realized that most of the time this is true. I have seen many new users post questions requesting exposure or information on how to get started in magic . I know that magicians are supposed to help magicians, but "magicians helping laymen" doesn't strike me as ethical. Especially since almost anyone has access to the internet nowadays.

Also, I believe that to simply answer these posts gives the impression that magic is simply about secrets and moves, and that it is only necessary to learn HOW things work, instead of WHY they work. They give the impression that anyone can learn and perform magic, when in reality the opposite is true, for magic requires not only practice, but also respect and love for the art and its advancement.

That is why I suggest that a few questions about the art are asked before anyone joins the forum, not only about basic knowledge of methods, but also maybe some questions about the history of the art. They don't have to be hard, they can even be multiple choice, but they should be questions that require a small amount of research to be done by them alone. This would assure that anyone who joins the forum has a sincere interest on the performance of magic and not simply it's secrets.
A few books where the information can be gained could also be recommended.

As I type, there are 21,317 members in the Café and I wonder how many of them love the art in themselves, and how many love themselves in the art. I believe that the increase of the latter can be stopped. And I hope the Café will support this.

Sincerely,
Alex Linian

The problem with a test Alex is cohort. That is, what age group do you design a test for? New kids on the block are up on some of the latest in magic and personalities while those of us who got into magic 30+ years ago would be left in the dust.

I could create a perfectly valid test that any newer person, good at magic or not, would be sure to fail. This has been discussed before and the consensus among the crew has always been that most people will show their true colors within the first fifty posts. Are they relevant or prattle? They are checked fairly well and if one or a few get by, these are uusually flagged by members of the Café and rechecked.

More than once a relatively new persons post count went from a healthy fifty six to twenty two. The system is what it is and for the most part - it works.

Alex,
If someone asks me a question, it doesn't take much to gauge their sincerity. A quick look at their user profile and previous posts says a lot. Then if necessary, I can administer my own "test," even if they don't see it as one by asking a leading question or two to "draw them out" and see if they truly understand what it is they're asking about.

So actually tests are already being administered, but they are tailored to the question at hand and on a one on one basis between individuals.
No trees were killed in the making of this message, but a large number of electrons were terribly inconvenienced.
