I am looking for a good quality chop cup that is well-made, has well-matched balls (so it doesn't require hard banging), and is readily available. In my search thus far, I am leaning towards the RNT II "Little Don" cup. I like the size, look, and feel of the cup. I am just wondering if there are other chop cups I ought to consider?

Are you looking for mini's or full size. The best full size that I've tried is the Johnson one. Nicely balanced gaff, beautiful cup.

It depends to some extent on your preference of style and, of course, price.
You could consider:

I agree with the recommendations made so far. I would like to add a leather Chop Cup available at: http://www.adessoverlag.com/cupsandballs.htm
This cup is well designed and economical. As an added plus the final loads can be billiard balls like a cue ball and an eight ball. Because the cup walls are flexible the final loads can be retained in the cup while picking it up by gently squeezing the sides of the cup. One additional plus, the vendor is a heck of a nice guy!! The Jim Riser shorty chop cup looks very beautiful, and would be a easy choice. And, I know from his other work the exceptionally high quality of his craftsmanship. I see, however, on his web site that he is not presently taking orders. So, I am assuming that these are unavailable for the foreseeable future.

I use an Ickle Pickle Widemouth Chop Cup - it's a special order item with some dealers, but it's about $30. I use RNT II balls with it because the gaff is in both balls of the set and the gaff is adjustable, as to strength and polarity. The cup will hold a 3" ball as a final load.

I have 2 Uday cups that are double walled copper, heavy, with a good patina. They cost me $19.75 each. My routine uses only the 2 cups.....

The RNTIIs are beautiful and come in a variety of sizes. They areexcellent in quality. I have purchased 4 different models and find each unique and useful in different ways.
La Petite - pocketable for use throughout the day. Little Don - great for restaurant work Stubby Don - great load Big Don - my first and large enough to be visible for a larger group huge load. Too big a load for most people's hands without exceptional crowd management. Frank's Leather Cup is great and my favorite for period work. I use it with my handmade felt balls which are also adjustable.

To me, there is only one chop cup...the "Master, Junior" that I bought in 1960 and that I still use today. It is the only chop cup that I ever saw Don Alan use (although he did endorse another one) and it was the cup used by Larry Jennings. I don't know if they are still available, but, if they are not, someone should re-make it. It has simple class, tradition, and works perfectly. As I recall, I paid $9.00 for mine in 1960.

The Morrissey copper Chop Cup is a nicely made cup, fairly compact, and takes a regulation tennis ball for a load. Although there are many choices, some of which are extremely well made, the Morrissey cup is less than $25 and may be one of the best combinations of low price, nice quality, simple clean appearance, and versatile size. They also make an aluminum Chop Cup of the same size, which I consider too light for professional work. Morrissey's standard size copper Chop Cup is a fine, inexpensive tool, and would make a great choice for a first Chop Cup. Their mini Chop Cups in copper or aluminum are nice pocket sized cups. Again, go with the copper one for a heavier, sturdier cup.
The Johnson "Golden" Chop Cup that matches their brass CNC Cups & Balls is another excellent choice for an entry level Chop Cup. They usually retail for about $75, but can be found on some magic dealers' web sites for as little as $65 or so. They sometimes come up on eBay and on the Magic Café Tricks-For-Sale forum for a little less. The Johnson brass Chop Cup is very well made, solid and sturdy, and the gimmick is undetectable. They will take a lacrosse ball for a load but not quite a regulation tennis ball. You can usually find dog toy tennis balls or some cheapie practice tennis balls that fit the Johnson cup perfectly. I just received the Don Alan stainless steel chop cup from RNT2, and it is terrific! I love the "heft" of it and it looks great. I hope I didn't make a mistake choosing the stainless steel version if it is going to scratch a lot. In any case, I am thrilled with this cup and I received excellent service from the people at RNT2.....although that avatar of Jake's is giving me nightmares......

You know, Frank Startsini's chop cup is very nice. If a full size leather chop cup that looks like something you would get from a deluxe or special edition of Yahtzee suits your fancy then this is about the best I've seen.
I have one of them and a chopped die. My family gathers and plays games on Friday nights. We got tired of Canasta so I suggested Yahtzee. I replaced the cup with one of Frank's and about half way through the game swapped out my gaffed die. then I spilled out the dice and there were only four. Of course I didn't say a word about this before hand. when they looked at me I got a surprised look on my face and produced it from my mouth. All the "Ughs and Nonno's!" were worth it. My family calls me Nonno, Italian for grandfather. |

Never forget that while "Nonno" may be Italian for grandfather, it is English for something else!
