The wife and I recently moved and we are in the process of installing a tiki bar into our new home. This gives me a great surface on which to perform magic for friends and family I previously didn't have. Now that the bar is in, I'd like some good magic that would fit a tiki, hawaiian, or polynesian theme to go with the room.
Right now, I have a mini-chop cup that looks like a big shot glass, a tiki-drink variation of "A Day at the Zoo" (www.grandillusions.com, search for "Zoo"), and some standard card tricks (including a just-read Eddie Fetcher book). Anyone have any suggestions as to other effects that could fit the theme? |

Benson Bowl with a Hawaiian calabash bowl.
Self lighting torches. A bizarre tale could be woven around a Tiki carving or statue. Maybe Google for "Hawaiian Folklore" and see what tales are out there. |

There's a C/S type effect using sea shells in Richard's Almanac by Allan Okawa ("Wish Shells" I believe).
Mike Roger's has a Cup & Ball routine using sea shells in his book. |

Think coconut shells!
Mediocrity is greatly under rated!

Aloha, from the land where Tiki bars are born, and there's a state law that every drink served must have a pinapple chunk and a little umbrella. We've got a few heavy bar magicians here, and they do some funky Hawaiian magic.
Allen Okawa published his "Wishing Shells" routine in Richard's Almanac, as Mitch said. Allen also had a Genii issue dedicated to him back in the 70's, and it had some cool stuff with puka shells, and other Hawaiiana. In his lecture notes, Allen also tipped his andling of Himber's "Big Trick" (aka the "Razored Deck") using the bar's blender. I use a half a coconut shell for a Benson-type bowl routine, the sponges are actually sponges--what else? (For performance sake, use a brown car sponge cut into natural sponge shapes.) See Mike Caveny's "Magicomedy" and you'll find another bowl type routine, done with a toilet plunger. For no good reason, one day I carved the handle of the plunger into a Tiki. Stained it dark brown, and now I pass it off as an "ancient Hawaiian artifact", wink wink. You might consider the Romain "Persian Pearls" routine from Frank Garcia's "Secrets of the Three Ball Routines". Mike Gallo has a set of notes in which he describes a "Sympathetic Coins" routine done with small "pearls" and seashells. I've used sand dollars for a "coins through the table" routine (talk about how the little buggers disappear into the sand) and if you can get your hands on video or descriptions of Sawa's classic seashell routines, do it. If I ever get out to your neck of the woods to lecture, ask me to show you "Spot, the Wonder Shell". A large Cowrie shell captures the selected card. And someday, you'll see the release of Allen's underground legend, the "Rock" trick. It's just that, a baffling trick done with a large beach rock. You might consider the coin in the bottle with a frosted "beach glass" bottle, and the ubiquitous nets beg you to do the "Balls in Net". In the "Secret Sessions" section, we're discussing effects possible with those little drink umbrellas, too. Drop by and say hey. There's a lot more, but all you really need is a start, and this should do. Okole Hao!

I seem to recall John Carney do a effect on TV at some point where he turned around for a brief instant and when he faced the audience again he was wearing sunglasses, had a smudge of suntan lotion on his nose, wore a flower lei, and was holding a tropical drink complete with tiny umbrella. My memory of this might be faulty but that is what I recall. I'm not sure if he has this written up anywhere or has it on DVD but it may be worth it to search it out. It could be a cute piece to perform while entertaining friends at your tiki bar.
Also, in an issue The New Invocation (No47 Oct 88) Tony included an effect of mine titled "Kahuna" which was the selection of a Petroglyph rubbing by the spectator which matches a petroglyph carved in a rock they were holding. Another effect of mine dealing with Kahunas and their ability to change the future was "Etched in Stone" which was shared with Brother Shadow's Shadow Network years ago. |

Why not make a tiki idol in which selected cards spring from its mouth and ears?
