Is there any advantage to choosing Schoolcraft or Lassen coins over Johnson when it comes to the Hopping Halves set? Especially if your choice is using American Half Dollars (not silver) and English Pennies? After all, they are not examinable anyway, and Johnson Coins seem pretty decent.

If you were using "non-standard" coins such as Barber halves or Walking Liberties in your act, I would recommend that you get yourself some custom-made gaffs. However, the custom gaffs can be extremely expensive, so unless you need them to match your coins, I think you're fine going with a Johnson set. I've been using one for years and it hasn't failed me yet.

I agree with Rob , unless you're using WL or Barber or silver dollars get the Johnson set. Lot of other uses for the gaff as well as the HH routine.
On the other hand if you're only after the HH routine, you might want to check out Curtis Kams HH routine in his "Dangerous Notions" notes. His routines doesn't use the HH gaff. It makes use of a somewhat more common gaff, you may already own. Best, Joe

Or, you could use the WL w/ an e[. Magic Warehouse has them for $45......

Go with the Johnson set. I have it and like it a lot. You can't let spec examine them before the effect, but that shouldn't be an issue if you go right into your routine. Since you are dropping the coins into your pocket as part of the routine, you're clean at the end. If someone asks to inspect them, it's too easy to produce coins from your pocket that they can examine all they want. Of course, since you just made them vanish, you can always claim there ARE no coins in your pocket!

For what it's worth, I wouldn't buy anything less than Johnson. I shelled out $45 for a sub-standard set and they're a pain to work with...nothing fits right and I feel like I'm always having to jump through hoops just to conceal the gimmick. My friend, on the other hand, has a set of Johnson's and there's just no comparison. His sh***s fit like gloves and even on close inspection everything looks legit.

Johnson is the way to go unless you want silver vintage coins. I have been using the same set for over 20 years & have never been busted.
While the custom jobs are great (I have many others that are custom) the Johnson is great value for the money & good enough for most performers of this routine. |

When performing, I usually take 4 sets of HH along. That way I can perform the effect and then do another group (or two or three) without having to "reset." Given the price difference it gets very expensive to use anything more costly than the Johnson set.

I purchased my HH set from Johnson Products over 15 years ago and has served me well. I have never been questioned in regards to the coins. The quality is top notch and a very good value for the money.

Johnson at least. The cheaper sets often lack expanded s****s, sticking you with a crummy looking, smooth-edged cut-down half.

Get the johnson...... at least that's my preference. I have never had a problem, they are almost 8 years old and work like I bought them yesterday! Definitley worth the money!

Same here. Dusted off my Johnson HH set the other day, performed the classic routine 4 times for friends and co-workers, great reaction from them and nobody questioned the gaffed set. Looks great. It's going back into the routine rotation. Jim |

Never really solved the "sound" problem with Hopping Halves, then again I haven't been called on it either. Maybe sometimes we worry too much about the litte things.
