I have noticed a lot of activity lately in I Want to See the Manager regarding bizarre magic. Also being the month of October and Halloween fast approaching, most of the magic magazines are featuring this type of story-telling magic.
The only performance of this genre I've seen was years ago (well over ten) in St. Paul when a Eugene Burgerlike Spirit Theater production was held in St. Paul's old caves. A very spooky venue as these are the caves that well known gansters supposedly had their hideouts during prohibition. (Stangely the police never seemed to notice - but that is another story). The performer was not a magician but a local actor who currently does voiceover commercials for Car Soup and is the voice of Bob the Baby on the Quiznos Sandwich Commercials. I was wondering where do all the Bizarrists perform? At last count on the Café alone, 39 people were interested in their own forum and hundreds have read the requests. I am hoping to see some of this type of magic but haven't heard a peep since the "cave days". It reads extremely well but I would like to see a performance. Any suggestions? Or reviews for that matter. Frank Tougas

Come to the cemetary at midnight. Performance is behind the crypt of the one-eyed pirate. Wear black. Shhhh!

I perform mainly in private shows, but there are many that perform in public venues. Trinity performs seance shows. Neil Tobin has a very popular show in a beautifully wonderful and creepy venue in downtown Chicago. http://www.supernaturalchicago.com/
True this is not typical Disney fare, although what they don't know doesn't hurt them While Bizarrists are rarely if ever featured in the Magic Castle headliners, occasionally you can find some paranormal occurances in the basement.

Frank,
Richard Colley and I have a public show in an Elizabethan townhouse in Chester, and we're looking to expand, this Christmas, into a small local theatre (seats 120). When I have more time during the day (i.e. when both kids are at school!), I'll be setting up a one-man show in my home city, Manchester. I'm working towards that at the moment, developing new material and making contacts with the tourist board and relevant members of the local council. And when that's going, I hope to pick up the party work again. Regards, Caleb Strange.

Mostly private parties, though I may well be doing some at the upcoming WindyCon science fiction convention in suburban Chicago. We are still up in the air about exactly what I will be doing for them at this late date. More to follow as things firm up.

This is an interesting topic. For those who perform mostly private shows I am curious how you get your bookings? What types of events do you perform at?
I find that you can work coffee houses (not Starbucks) if you work with a Tarot. If you work really dark it becomes a little tougher. Ciao, Francesco

Personaly it's just a word of mouth and weird incidents (i don't do this for a living): I get approached by people in bars, Cafés or wherever I flash a quick one (flash as in perform)...one thing leads to another and usually they leave with my phone number and contact me for private sessions (i feel like a giggolo LOL)

Quote: Wow some fantastic idea there, science fiction conventions, I suppose some of the larger comic book conventions would be a good venue as well (my oldest son attends those all the time). Thank you all for your answers. I hope I get a chance to see some of you perform sometime.

A word about sceince fiction conventions: unless you are working clueless cons (the ones run by non-fans, strictly for money), you will NOT make much, if any money. Fannish cons are acts of love, except for WorldCon and one or two others. ComicCons, on the other hand, are often cash cows and you can get paid IF you can get a publisher or the con itself to sponsor your act.
Which is NOT an easy sell as you have to have a STRONG tie-in and usually an "in" with an artist or writer to get that. Fortunately for me, my Dad was an old member of the National Cartoonist's Society and I have been active in fandom for a LOT of years, so I have friends in strange places on the SF side and am slowly developing leads into the comic side. Gaming cons, for the most part, are like the SF cons, except for the biggies, like GenCon, but Wizards of the Coast, unlike TSR, do not seem to like to spend money on anything not directly related to product, so shows are right out, unless you are a media guest, like a TV star or movie star or artist star and, rarely, a game designer star. But there is money in them thar hills, IF you know how to mine it. Lee Darrow, C.H.
