Here is Ray Goullet performing Houdini's Blooming Rose Bush, owned by my good friend Ken Klosterman. This clip was shot in the summer 1999 at Klosterman's Salon de Magi.

John Gaughan has another one of these unit that were originally made by Rudy Schlosser. I restored the flowers on it and am anixously awaiting seeing the finished product. John's unit was owned by Sid Radner.
Schlosser's mechanism was quite unique. I have always thought (based on Schlosser's catalog) description that this was meant to be done between a translucent screen. You would see the shadow of the bush growing up and remove the screen to show the full sized bush and pick it up off the table. Great clip. Richard

Stephanie Griswald used to perform with a P&L blooming rose bush. That is the only example of this illusion that I've been fortunate enough to view in person.
Mr. Hughes, I was going to ask you this earlier; Would you happen to know the builder of the Trellis Illusion that Stephanie Griswald performed at Abbott's probably around '93. I was told that it was a rare illusion and that only a few were made. Mr. Frank, great video! I visted Klosterman's basement.... err, I mean Salon de Magi years ago. Kind of like a Disneyland for magic history enthusiasts. Does he still have his picnic at his estate in the summer? Cris |

Stephanie did an old Abbott's prop called the "Caliph's Garden". It was a good idea but the steals became pretty obvious because they were overdone and bouquets were not that big. It was an old effect in the catalogs that they made a few up of. I have in the workbooks a variation on it with the entire act ending up on the platform so it could strike. There is a blooming trellis built into the thing, flower boxes for bouquets, and botanias and other things. It really was a complete act. Just never got around to make one up.
The P&L bush is not even close in complexity to the Houdini bush. If you see me at a convention, introduce yourself and we can talk more about this effect. Richard

Thanks for the info. Sheppard always referred to it as the "Trellis Illusion" and said not many were made (including one for Blackstone.) It's nice to know the actual name of the apparatus now. Unfortunately, I didn't get to see Stephanie perform that year as I was in school and didn't get to Abbott's until the day after she performed in the evening show. When I was at Walt's house, the illsusion was always crated up in his garage, so I never got to see it in action. He did describe to me the routine and how the steals were concealed in the trellis. Didn't it also use a couple of botania's in the finale? He was always trying to convince me to purchase it. "Come on Cris, just $1500... how about $1200... $1000 is as low as I'll go." As I've said before, how I wish I had some money back then as he was getting ride of his collection very cheap.
I watched the clip above of the Houdini Bush and it reminds me of all those great automatons that Klosterman also has. And yes, a P&L Bush is quite valuable to a collector, but nothing compared the presentation of the Houdini Bush. I can only imagine that the Schlosser Bush is equally impressive. Cris |

The original Caliph's Garden did not have anything with it but the bouquet loads.
Stephanie also did the act on the Statler Bros. show. Richard

Thanks again for the info. I had only seen her Dove act on the Statler Bros., but had heard she was on there again.
