For those in need of a little help, the crossword is a 3x3 grid, with the central square blank.
Once you have got one of the clues, the rest should be VERY easy ;-) As for the number - it will help if you are a mathematician

Well, then, perhaps I was starting out correctly, since I got here:
EYE Y Y EYE but how that gets me to a number remains beyond me. Since I'm not a mathemetician, that probably isn't surprising.

The grid is correct. Use a little, shall we say... imagination?

Minus one is right!
The shape of the grid is "Eye squared" "i" in mathematical terms is an imaginary number - the square root of minus one. Squaring "i" gives you minus one (Or, as Stan Algar said in his anagramatic post right at the top of the page... negative one)
