Sure, try this experiment; Take pictures of Elvis, Mandrake the Magician, Merlin, David Bowie, Alice Cooper, Pat Boone, Mr. Rogers, Mark Wilson and The New York Dolls and see which images are closer to each other than others. IMHO you will find the squeaky clean middle of the road pseudo-casual dress magician and musical entertainer almost interchangeable when compared to contemporary images of "other" magicians in our culture and other musical entertainers working at the time. Nothing wrong with the squeaky clean 1960's image thing.

It's interesting hear how magicians are viewed differently by different people. I never thought of Blaine as being 'cool,' I just didn't see that he embodied anything cool, he just seems very informal and street wise. In fact, in some ways I think I might see right through his persona; I see someone who appears to still be trying to figure out who he is. Maybe that's an unfair assessment, but it is my impression. I don't think of him as being authentic. He strikes me as the kind of guy who searched for an identity for years, and finally found a schtick that fit him well. Not cool...great performer and magician, but not cool....

You know it's funny, in Blaine's book Mysterious Stranger, he talks about how he came up with his persona which he credits in part to Paul Harris. They spent a week together in a cabin in Colorado brainstorming and came up with an urban shaman sort of character as a joint effort.

It's like somebody said, "cool" is in the eye of the beholder. There is no universal definition for it. I went to three different high schools. At the first one, the "cool" kids were flushing other kids' heads in the toilets. At the next one, the cool kids were smoking dope and having wild sex. At the last one I ended up at, the cool kids were the ones who made the best grades and were getting the most scholarships. I could never get used to how different the standards for "cool" were. I finally realized there is no way to be cool all the time, to everybody. But just a thought: most people who end up being considered "cool" start out by going completely against the grain, believing in themselves when nobody else does. They inspire people without necessarily trying to be inspirational.
Personally though, I think Blaine is cool, Copperfield too, and Penn and Teller. (And Paul Harris is awesome.) Lance Burton or Siegfried and Roy don't fit my idea of cool, but I love their magic. I don't even think Criss Angel is cool. We've got a weatherman here in Alabama named James Spann that is considered "cool" (when he came to speak at the school I graduated from, he got mobbed by teenagers wanting autographs!). And the odd thing: he's bald, looks as geeky as any magician you've ever seen, short and thin, and he's also a Sunday School teacher! "Cool" is truly an elusive, intangible quality . . . |

Ok let's settle this fast....
The person who wrote David Blaine being the only "cool" magician probably meant that Every single magician he had seen was nerdy or looked like an over theatrical cheesy guy in need of attention. Which was probably true. He probably just meant that Blaine was keeping it real and that was cool. The guy personally felt that magic was only done by the previously mentioned people for attention but Blaine did it even though he didn't need it to appeal to people. We have already heard all what makes a person cool and I kind of agree but I will tell you several things. to be cool you just have to know how to appeal to as many people are you can. Any one person can have their own personal opinion but the only thing that matter is how most people see you. The only people that do tend to say "cool" are teens. So therefore you can tell where that point of view was coming from. You want to be cool? Appeal to teens. You want to be respected as a great entertainer, appeal to older crowd. The way you dress won't matter to them. The way you act probably will. For younger people to be cool you must dress the part and be seen by them as cool. I guess its a young thing. Old people*no offence* should stop trying to be cool and enjoy the beauty of aging. There will always along the way be some people who think you are cool.<---Now that last sentence is cool I think I am pretty cool.
