Do people use this effect for strolling magic (using a TT)? I am surprised to learn that a magician that I respect hugely does. I would worry that a significant proportion of people would know about TTs?....
if you do use this sort of thing, what kind of presentation do you go in for? Thanks people Felix |

You would be surprised what people do not know. Most don't. Even those who do are usually good sports about it because I make them feel like they are now part of the magic in-crowd. They have fun this way so they don't expose the trick. I throw them an insided joke and say, "Oh, you know this one? Would you give this trick a thumbs up?" Usually they laugh and say yes. Then they stay quiet and let the others enjoy the trick. I make them my "partner in crime" and ask them, "How am I doing" to invlove them. It also builds a mystic around them. Then they really want to keep the secret.
To reward them for their loyalty, I do a special trick that involves just them. One of my best that will blow them away. Miguel Rangel

I use it all the time.
Once in a blue moon you will find a person who knows about it, but will stay quiet until you are finished and will tell you in private. I guess it makes them feel good to be in the know and they have to let you know about it.

There are a number of ways you can disguise the trick, if you suspect the audience knows about the TT. The Salvano DVD (recently released as a DVD) is an excellent resource. He has some very good ideas/techniques that will throw off those who are in the know. Ron |

I'd like to show you the very first trick I ever learnt when I was 9..It came under the christmas tree and is a very common beginner trick. It starts off with a hanky, now every magic trick you buy comes with instructions, my mom was reading them to me on that cold christmas morning 14 years ago.
She said: First of all you have to make sure to take off your rings, watches and make sure your sleeves are rolled up. Next you have to look like a magician (mockingly and dramatically stroke the silk in my hand with a Copperfieldesque face) You then make a fist, even thought theres nothing in the fist (gesture) you make a fist. Step number 4 is to poke the hanky in the top and make sure it dosent come out the bottom (poke both ends) Then my mom said, "that's it! now all you have to do is open your hand" I was thinking to myself, how can it dissapear when I can still feel it inside my hand, then she said to trust the magic silk and to open it, and when I did......... I repeat it one more time pretending to "explain it" and I make it come out of my mouth. don't underestimate the thumb tip, not everyone knows about it. In fact ALOT more people don't then do.. Even if someone catches you and you catch them catching you with their eyes, a smile and a wink and they wont say anything. They will still be impressed at how slick you did it. If I have a feeling the person is dying to tell someone, right before I leave, I say "if you want to know how this trick is done ask the gentleman right here, he'll tell you"..More often than not he is more impressed I know he knows how its done and dosent say anything. If he does... so what... don't repeat it during the night.. If someone says out loud "hes got a fake thumb", I mockingly do the old finger trick showing my thumb comes off its base and on the offbeat I get rid of the thumbtip, The person will look at your hand and wonder what happened. I have them often done a billswitch right after being busted with a tt and they had no clue. I love it!! I open with the above routine for kids and adults in any show. In walkaround I'll do it 3 times.. Beggining of night middle and end. Saying "this is one of the first tricks I ever learnt, you can find it in almost all beginners magic kits" it covers you by saying, its a beginner trick and its not a HUGE secret.. A well performed silk vanish packs a huge blow, I'll do it forever... |

I do a sucker silk vanish all of the time. I put the silk into my fist as I normally would and just stuff it in there, blow, claim it's gone, blow, and say it's back! I do it 3 times until the kids are SCREAMING that it's still there then I actually vanish it, blow, claim it's gone and the kids scream open your hand, and I say "why?" they say because it's still there and I say no really it went, open the hand briefly showing it and the other hand empty then go to reproduce it from their sleeve if permitting, a purse frame, or just my bare hands. It works GREAT.

I use a silk vanish as an opener for my restaurant act .. My patter is along the lines "Did your waiter/waitress warn you about the napkins here ? No ? omigosh look what happens .. If you put anything into the napkin ( stuff my silk in there) and crumble it up and blow on it , what ever you put in there disappears.. ( Use TT)
THey love it and they are so focused on the dinner napkin they never notice a TT steal .. TRy it you will like it

I like to make a rabbit out of a regular hanky then feed him a red silk (a carrot) gradually until it`s vanished.

I use it all the time. For great presentations, see "Seriously Silly".
And don't forget Dave Williamson's Whirlybird Vanish. and as I stated long ago... Pat Page's video on the thumbtip. Wonderful.

I would think the Lamp Chiminey vanish would be a killer. Use one of the restaurants tall water glasses. Start to wipe out the inside with a white silk handkerchief, stop... call attention to what you are holding and POOF. A killer vanish.

I'm glad you like it paymerich. It's something that I believe would work well for someone with a wacky performing persona such as mine.
