The all knowing imps often seen on the shoulders of magic giants whispering into their ears began with Harry Kellar on his 1894 poster. They evoke a mysterious connection with the unknown and magical for the non-magician. A similar poster was used by Thurston.
You seem to be lucky or unlucky enough to have two prancing around you. The two on your shoulder are taken directly from Harry Keller's publicity poster. Those two are also seen on Ricky Jay and a few other modern or living performers. In reality they whisper things in your ear that have nothing to do with magic. Did you hear that?....or that?........ I find it best to suffer the struggle of angel on one side and imp on the other. Oh they can keep ya busy. I found a large collection of performer’s posters with imps. I like the picture, and have no trouble with daemons.
I was asking about them earlier as they are supernatural creatures and have their own stories to tell. When they are your familiars, you might wish to share some of those stories.

Like most advertisements today, controversy was probably what got people talking about the show and the performer. Phrases like, "Death Defying" were also used. Judging by the popularity of such acts, using Imps on posters didn't hurt.
The word Imp is from the Latin; without punishment. Todays equivalent is Impunity. "The Devil made me do it!"

Imp can also come from other sources -- Impeccable, impecunious, important, impotent.

I'm not anti-muggle though. I said I like your avatar but never expressed opposition to the term "muggle". In fact I use it whenever I don't use "marks".
