Here's an idea: Whenever you come up with an idea or technique, keep it to yourself.
Everyone likes to receive recognition from their peers. And everyone likes to make money. This should be quite obvious, from the abundance of material on the market, on magazines, here on the Café, and others places. Some of the stuff is good, some of it is ok, and a lot of it is bad. The bad material is sometimes just stupid, not always, sometimes. Other times it's simply undeveloped ideas that were published too soon. So I suggest the following: Whenever you think you have come up with something groundbreaking -or just something new-, how about you simply add it to your repertoire, and make it even better! If it's a sleight, come up with an effect for it. If it's an effect, come up with a presentation for it. If it's a presentation, improve it and/or even add an emotional hook to it. Perform it. Perform it over and over. And over. And over. Until you think it has reached it's fullest potential. Then, if anyone is interested, share it with them. Not only will this improve you as an artist and magic as an art, It can also save us a lot of money and reading, lol. Of course, there are people out there who could care less about the art in magic, who will not change their ways. Why? Because all they see is an easy market where they can make money from impressionable customers. To them, I wish only death. I still have hope in you.

Agreed. Although death is a bit harsh. Surely that should be reserved for people who steal others' material.

Ever read the Neil Gaiman story "Calliope" from his Sandman series?
Sometimes it's good to drop a pebble of an idea into the pool of current thought to watch the ripples. As long as it's your pebble and you are prepared to let go of it, seems an okay thing to do. Mind you if it's just a worthless rock you are plunking in, don't be surprised when the pond throws it back at you.

It's certainly an idea, and why not too, if you fear the vultures that much
However, on any universal adoption, I suspect the rocks Jonathan speaks of, would be those thrown by cavemen. |
