As I'm practicing my magic my audience is ;
My wife who thinks it is a mid-life crisis, so much for that new sports car!! My 14 year old daughter who thinks I'm mad, (whatever!!! talk to the hand!!! etc) My 5 year old daughter who thinks daddy is magic then proceeds to take my tricks and illusions apart.! You can't win in a house full of females, now the youngest wants me to use a 'magic word' as they try their hardest to look surprised as their chosen card appears upside down in a pack of cards yet again... but I'm not willing to use abracadabra, izzy wizzy or allacazam!!!.. I may try to make one up from my own language (Welsh)and its got me thinking..... so I want to know what words or sounds you use (especially interested if there is a Welsh wizard out there!)...... I promise not to copy any that are posted here but suggestions are welcome!! over to you!
Far 2 fat and far 2 furious!!!!

I feel your pain. Nobody in my family wants to see anything that I do any more. I've stopped performing for them entirely. The only exception is my 3 year old granddaughter and she has no idea what she's watching. She just knows that it's magic and she wants to be a magician too (she's a ham). She's convinced that her Nonno (that's what she calls me) and she are the only 'Gicians in the entire world. Once I told her that she was my apprentice and ever since she has been a princess gician. It's our special club and everybody else is, she tells me, an audience. I've taken the time to emphasize to her that audiences are special since without them we couldn't be magicians.
As for the magic word - since I love my grandkids the magic word is either 'Please' or 'Thank You'. For my coins across routine I have the spectator say GO! and I say GONE. I can't remember where I got that but it isn't mine. Hmmm, makes me think, "I learned this trick while travelling in the Gogone mountains of Tibet..." |

I don't really use a magic word unless I am working with kids. I like snaps and waves of the hand to denote that the magic is happening. With young kids I will string some of the usuals together, but I insist that the kids help. It is great hearing the kids try to say these words! If the kids are older, I ask them to supply the magic words.

Anybody who ever watched the Magic Land of Alakazam knows the magic word, its:
"Kelloggs"
"Now here's the man with the 25 cent hands, that two bit magician..."

"Huh?" make a surprised face as though you didn't expect the outcome.
Don't worry about the audience. My 9-year-old's response to every trick is, "Daddy's hiding something in his hand..." John

I'm in the same boat here with family reactions. My wife just looks at me, like she knows I did something clever, rather thn magical, and my 9-year old daughter doesn't like being tricked.
I don't have a word yet, haven't felt a need for one with the basic stuff I'm doing at the moment. So who do you practice on, when you don't have an appreciative audience? Mike |

As your performing the 'move' the magic phrase should be: "Oh please work!"
With all seriousness though. The only word I use is during a sponge ball routine. I have one sponge ball in the left hand. It's time for the spectator to make it disappear from the hand. So I tell them to say this: say, "woogie woogie woogie." Ha- hopefully you'll get the correct pronunciation. Then I tell the spectator to say it backwards, "ooga wooga woo." Then I say, "Now do you know what happened?" They say, 'no.' And I say that's absolutely right- nothing at all. I show then the same sponge ball in my hand; it hasn't vanished. "But it sounds good!" Then at that moment I perform a retention vanish- and then the rest of the routine. Tomasko

I use ABRACADABRA. If it ain't broke, don't fix it, is my motto. But I love Siegfried and Roy's SARMOTI.
The Amazing Mumford's a la peanut butter sandwiches is good too. |

I put my fist up in the air (with a straight arm) and then I bend the elbow, bringing the fist down, at which time I yell "SHAZAM!"
That seems to work well. TIP: If you're doing an effect which needs "lots" of magic, you can also yell "SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHAZAM!" You can also sneeze all over them. This is especially great for the classic pass as it provides much needed misdirection while still in the early stages. |

Jordini,
When I was a kid, I used to love watching a show where an old man and a kid rode around in a Winnibago and then he turned into a superhero by shouting Shazam. Good magic word. Peace, Parson
