Steve Baker posted a sad and frustrating tale of one EA doing harm to a “friend” and fellow EA by stealing his gig! Mr. Baker posted this as over on the WEAR thread. He called for discussion of forming a “Brotherhood of Escape Artists”. Needless to say the idea has generated some discussion.
You can see the discussion at: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......tart=570 I believe that this topic merits a thread of it’s own so here it is. I haven't a clue about how to move the posts already discussing the idea. Perhaps Mr. Baker, HelenHeld, ufo,Cliff, and others that posted in response to the idea would like to repost here? I am at sea as to what to call the idea. We cannot be a “brotherhood” or "fraternal order" since there are a significant (and growing) number of female escape artists that are performing and contributing here. Helen mentions “Union” (Union of Escape Artists). Perhaps it is as simple as forming an organization known as “The Association of Escape Artists”. The Society of American Magicians started with just such an idea and need to protect the rights of performing magicians. Is this an idea whose time has come for EAs?

I mentioned the word "Union" to make the point that without being a trade union, actively preventing bad promoters and performers from operating would be impossible, pointing out the example of the Magic Circle to show what we could actually do. I do not mean we should actually aim to be a union; that brings all manner of politics and problems and would in any case be smashed by promoters and bigger entertainment unions in no time.
No, leave the union stuff to Equity (in the UK - I don't know what the US equivalent is), what we want here is an association that can provide prestige and validity to the art of escape, membership of which would demonstrate that a performer is accepted as a reliable and respected practioner of the art of escape. The logo can be used on publicity to add validity to a performer's act, validity that is denied those who don't play by the rules. As for the name, Association of Escape Artists is adequate, unfortunately three letter acronyms tend to be used by many different organisations (a quick google search immediately brings up the American Electronics Association and the American Economics Association for AEA), so something catchy as a title is called for (the name "Magic Circle" is particularly evocative and has done a lot for the reputation of that organisation). I can't think of anything particular offhand, but I'll give it some thought and report back. |

Well, if it were the International Association of Escape Artists (IAEA), we would have won the Nobel Peace Prize this year!

Sorry couldn`t resist it. BTW I don`t think this is going to work,,,,based on experience with the IBM and Magic Circle. Will post my own experiences when I have more time,,,,in brief the nature of survival among men and women in any biz, will outway any voluntary rules set up by them as a group. The enforcement of said rules would be impossible. As in all of life there are the honourable and others,we know who are what and that`s about it. Just my opinion,,, Ken. |

I think it can work just fine, as long as we keep our goals clearly in sight and don't try to be what we are not.
Indeed becoming a judicial gorup that levys fines to poor promotional decisions, is well beyond the abilitys of such a group as we would be. However getting a group of us together to approach an E.A. who is backstabbing and having a talk with him, might well be a possibility. Advising each other of promoters to watch out for might be possible too. But these are the punitive side. I would like to see, like this board, E.A.s helping E.A.s or at least getting together like we did at Cannons for a real good time. Giving appropriate awards is always nice. Later on a newsletter, and etc. I think this is a great idea, I think we should go for it, and I personally will hep out in anyway I can. Cliff p.s. it is a rotten name, but "Combined under freedom" has great initials.

Kondini...you are 100% correct as far as enforcement goes. I wouldn't like to see the group be used much for that anyways. I think the group should be to promote and advance the art. If you make it where people want to be a part of it....then you hope they bring civility, honesty, etc.

I second Ken's views above. I wonder why it is that small meetings and conventions are all we expect them to be - and more, but as soon as we start to get very organised the politics creep in ????

With all due respect, I for one feel such a "brotherhood" (forgive me girls) already exists. It exists, because there are principles that I have chosen to live by for most of my adult life, principles I chose to live by even now -- and these same principles give me warm and fuzzy feelings towards anyone else in my profession that chooses to do the same.
If anyone needs me to spell out what these principles are... well, I don't think they would understand anyway, if you get my point. Acronyms are cute. But then again, so are pit bull puppies. Chance |

I feel that as President of Escape Masters, THE INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF ESCAPE ARTISTS, and Editor/Publisher of Escape Masters Magazine, I should make a comment on this issue. We do ALREADY exist, and currently have members on four continents around the world, and our membership continues ot grow. Our magazine has also enjoyed greater content, and size due to the increased number of columnists that submit articles for the magazine.
Having said that, I agree with both Kevin and Chance as they both make valid points. We should not be an enforcement group, nor will it take an association to prevent bad people from doing bad things. People who have character will do the right things. People without character will sometimes not do the right things. We are ALWAYS, ALWAYS, looking for new members and new ideas for Escape Masters. This is the only way that we will continue to grow and get better. We need the input of people who have a valid interst in the art of escapes and seeing it succeed. A vaild example was the escape convention put on by Mark and Sheila Cannon. They are dealers and performers, and not an association, but yet they put on a great convention. Both Mark and Sheila have a deep respect for out art, and do more than their fair share to contribute to it's success. Escape Masters was there, as the International Association of Escape Artists, to support the convention in many ways. I served as a judge for the talent contest, gave out two Escape Masters awards, and had a dealer's booth. We each have to do our own part for the the art to succeed. I do not pretend to have to have all the answers. Ask Kevin, I am always in the wrong room! All kidding aside, we each bring something special to the art of escapes, and through Escape Masters, The Escape Convention, The W.E.A.R. event, and many other venues, we all have to do our part to continue to make our art flourish. You all have made very good points, and I
like Cliffs T.I.E.S. Chance I agree with you,as I chose the same principles, but unfortunately not all in our proffesion are so inclined! I think most everyone at the convention feel as we do. It's the ones without principles, who cause most of the problems that we have to deal with! An organized brotherhood would be able to deal with this kind of problem! My idea was to form the...International Brotherhood of Escape Artists... As it's base, the principles we have spoken of!! Steve |

We need another group like Steve Baker needs a new belly button.
There is no way to enforce things, and people are going to fight for their right to get stuck on stupid. Right now in the kid show area, they are defending the right to play around a kids butt. I think the Cannon's with their wonderful convention have the best idea. Here we are, come or do not. Once here, join in or with whomever you wish. Listen and learn or do not. It is a great idea, I just lack the faith in the process. Good luck if you are insistant. |

I'm only a hobbyist, so I don't know about professional performance, but as HelenHeld mentioned Equity, I guess that at least some of you pros are members. Would it be possible for you to lobby for a specialist committee within Equity?

Pb, there is already a brother/sisterhood of escape artists, they know who they are and they know who they are in contact with. Each individual of this 'hood' will know others who in turn know others. For most part, all are linked. Some are bound tighter than others but between them all there is a very strong bond. When one seems to need help or assistance, individuals will do what they can and if the need arises, word goes out to others. A strong network already exists and has for many many years. It doesn't need a title and doesn't need rules, it exists via an unwritten code to which all that I know of within follow. Like all things in life, there are those who flout the ideals and they are known. Some of the idividuals are pros, some hobbists, some like groups some are loners. Within this 'hood' much happens but nearly always out of sight.
