Welcome to the Café! San Francisco is not too far from me. Royal Road is an excellent book to learn from. Best of luck!

Welcome, bunnydoctor! Jeff is right, Royal Road is a great way to start (and cheap too!). Have you already purchased "Born to Perform"? If not, I would suggest saving your money and buying Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic instead. You can get that for around $20, or less if you find a used copy. This will give you a great all-round introduction to the different facets of magic, and you'll go on using the tricks for years!

If you're the sort of person who needs a visual aid, then I would suggest Michael Ammar's "Easy to Master Card Miracles" series. You'll learn a lot of great tricks, and get lots of advice on how to present them.

In the meantime, you'll find plenty of advice and encouragement in these forums!
