I personally wear a nice chrome engraved one with my first & last name only.
Thinking about the next one having "Magician" under my name (although I don't have a clue why). Anyone else wear one? If so what's on it, and why?

Like your tag line says, "Prececption is reality." Whos perception? The guests and the staff. Let me clarify, I mean wearing the nametag of the restaurant you currently work in. It sends a messege to the staff that you are part of the team. It also helps when aproaching a table. Some people read it and ask. It starts a conversation and I'm in!
I usually have the name Magic Man on all of mine. I believe it is important to adapt to the culture of a restaurant. There is only one restaurant that I do not where a name tag because the staff doesn't wear one. If they did, I'd love to wear one. Ironically this restaurant concept used to make serves wear pins and buttons and crazy hats. Now they've gone the other way where they don't even wear a nametags. You should see my magic case. I got so many nametags it looks like something out of a spy movie with passports. So who do I want to be today? Miguel Rangel

Great minds think alike! I also hav a name tag with my name on it and, underneath, it simply says "Magicman". I wear this tag whenever I'm table hopping, strolling or even doing a birthday show. It gives me an instant identity and raison d'etre when I approach a crowd. This is especially important when approaching children. In today's paranoid culture, you better have an IMMEDIATE reason for approaching a child who isn't your own. When the parents see and read the name tag, they immediately feel a little more at ease.

I always start with the name tag effect 'your name here'. You introduce yourself and immediately someone notices that your name tag is blank, no problem just waive your hand over it and your name appears. A very snappy attention getter, and a great reason to have the name tag!

One problem with the name tag idea. Don't bite my head off here guys just think a little.
Perception is reality is a huge correct statement. Perception of name tags is that the vast magority of professionals do NOT wear them. Don't bother to read me the list of them who do, I already know it. BUT consider others who wear them. Fast food employees jump to mind. I was one so I have nothing against them. I have heard HUNDREDS of comedians make the same type of joke where if you are over 30 and still wearing a name tag at work, you made a serious career choice mistake. I never wear one. BUT neither do the servers at the establishment I work for. I just know what many people feel about name tags and it is as I said. Of course I also work with the servers handing out flyers and pitching me to the tables so there is no confusion who I am and why I am there. I am dressed differently than the staff so I am not confused with a buss boy. Name tags would be kind of out of place at a 4 star restaurant. Mind you this is MY opinion and I only know it is right for me, and possibly only for me. Others have theirs and are just as correct, just something to think about is all.

Dannydoyle - some great comments against them.
I tend to wear them, but the one I use is brushed metal with my name engraved in it; below it, it reads my tag line: "Logic Defied". I guess it all depends on how the name tag looks and your character. In the restaurant, having the name tag distinguishes me from the other guests, lets them know that I am the house magician, and gives me credibility. When I walk up to a table, people very often think I'm the house manager and again, once I introduce myself, or they read the tag (or both!) their misconceptions are alleviated. A name tag can be a very useful tool - and if anyone can think of a way to load a signed and selected card UNDER the name tag, let me know a.

I've always felt that everything I wear or display should serve a purpose. I'm a comedy family entertainer...so my wardrobe has to promote fun. I wear a changing variety of buttons and tags on my vest...nothing outlandish or loud...but each button and tag is magnetic and serves a purpose. My buttons and nametags change to reveal a prediction, chosen card, cartoon character or coin. They compliment my show and do not detract. It's become a game and challenge with my regulars to try and catch me switching or activating them.
My favorite is a 3-D gold-plate lapel bunny in a top hat that suddenly holds up a chosen card that I'm having trouble finding. My nametag is a more stylish custom version of "Your Name Here" that changes for revelations. I agree with Alym that wearing a nametag is a matter of taste, character and environment. But...if you're going to wear one, why not make it part of the act? To each his and/or her own! Skip

I am sorry is Carrot Top unemployed? Is Gallager unemployed? Sorry but so are most magicians. Not a good comparison.
Does your accountant wear one>? Does your plumber wear one? Does your lawyer wear one>? Your doctor and nurse do certianly so I realize that many do also. Like I said just making a point on the other side. I will completly agree with Skip. It should definatly be serving a purpose. If it fits in where you work then by all means do it. It does not where I am so I choose not too. It further does not fit ME personally so again I have never done it. that is a personal choice, not a hard fast fact by the way

The most important and probably the sole reason I can think of for a magician or other performer to wear a nametag...other than it works into your performance persona in some way...is marketing. When I perform stand-up comedy, I book myself as Skip Way. My posters, flyers, headshots and intros all tout the name and a nametag worn on stage would be ridiculous clutter. Skip never wears a nametag.
When I perform in my magician persona, it is most often close up or in small groups. When parents ask the inevitable question, "What would you like to do for your party this year?" When business owners ask themselves, "What should we do for this product promotion and our open house?" When marketing execs ask themselves, "What can we do to draw & hold people at our trade show booth this year?" I don't want them to say, "What about that magic guy we saw last week...Whats-his-name!" I want them all to say, "We want Happy Dan the Magic Man!" I adopted the rhyming name as a mnemonic that helps children and adults remember me..."You know! The Magic Man...um...Happy Dan!" My name & image appears on everything I hand out...including my nametag. It's always there...right in front of the potential client. Throughout the show, I am "beating" that rhythmic name visably and audibly into their head so that they'll never forget it. It must work, because I don't advertise at all and I'm averaging bookings 6-7 days a week. In fact, I will be so glad when January rolls around and I can slow down a bit! Like Danny says, it doesn't fit everyone's persona. It happens to fit mine. It is an individual taste...like EVERYTHING that is discussed in this magnificent forum. Consider the options and do what works for you. Great discussion, magi! Skip

I guess I havent been out there enoungh. I didn't realize that Carrtot Top and Gallager are the only two comedians alive. I could have sworn there were many unemployed comedians in Hollywood.
My plumber has his name sewn on his shirt as a patch so I guess that doesn't count. My accountant works from his home office and does not even wear a suit when I come over. How unprofessional! Come on guys, what are we doing? Miguel Rangel
