It was probably "Crazy Man's Handcuffs". You'll find lots of threads here about the effect. It appears in The Magic of Michael Ammar, and on Dan Harlan's Rubberband Magic Videos, Volume 1 I believe.

As Bill said, do a search for CMH, penetrating bands and or Crazy Mans handcuffs. Or just grab 2 number 19 rubberbands and go to a magic shop. I'm sure they will sell you a source and then demonstrate how to do it.

Who is the real creator of CMH?

I believe the first to be credited with the penetration of two rubber bands was Arthur Setterington. Anyone know anything about this man who started a huge, huge interest in rubber band magic with this particular effect?

A very well known and respected magician from the UK. Am I mistaken, or did he also invent the Flipper coin?

I just noticed a version of this at that also shows the bands being linked.

I haven't seen that before, I've only seen the unlinking.

Anyone know if the linking part of the effect is widely available, or is it worth buying from

Given that I already know the Unlinking part, I'm a little hesitant to buy the whole effect again just to get the linking part.

Still it looks very good.

Since the first patent for rubber bands was issued to Goodyear in 1845 you have your time frame in which the first person to create CMH created it. Someone in the last 160 years. It was probably a bored secretary or number cruncher. Or maybe it was just a Crazy Man.

The magic of Michael Ammar has a history of the unlinking rubber band trick. The CMH routine is Ammar's presentation of this effect. It was also published a long time ago in Tarbell volume 7. Personally, I never use the CMH presentation.
