Before I start, let me clarify one thing. I like Cris, and I am enjoying his specials. But I want to say something just in the way of observation, and wonder if you also noticed this.
First, I have no idea how he did the thing with Amazing Jonathan slamming him through a brick wall....but it looked pretty deadly to me! The other effect I have in mind is the one where he slams his hand down on the cups and avoids the sharp knife. I know there are several versions of this on the market floating around, and I am not privy to the method because I have never layed out the bucks. However, this is what I found strange:This was suposedly entirely impromptu. He walks into a restaurant, he borrows some items and proceeds to blow the patrons away. BUT, how many times have you walked into a restaurant and they just happened to have exactly the knife you need for your demonstration? Specifically, one that balances on it's end. And then, they just happen to have some very tall styrofoam cups that are the correct size to cover the knife. That is unreal. It's like going to a venue and not bringing your performing table, but just trusting that they will have a suitable table for you to perform on. It doesn't often work that way. Not in the real world. And in the real world, the restaurant, if you are very lucky, may have the perfect "balancing" knife and cups for this "impromptu" demonstration. But odds are not in your favor. This took away the edge for me in this effect. It just emphasized to me that this is TV world, and not the real world that you and I live and perform in. In TV world, everything is perfect, and ANYTHING is possible. God I wish I could go there.....

I noticed this too, but he did say he has been there many times with lance Burton. So, he might have spotted the materials before hand and knew that it would work. just my two cents

Great trick - but not impromtu really.
Between the lights and the cameras, you have to get permission from the restaraunt first before you can do it. Great trick though.

You complain like a laymen.
As if everyone at any magic show often comments about the effects and tricks they just saw. Of course it's all tricks. What? Do you really think he has the powers to be? Come on, it's entertainment. And I was totally entertained even though I knew the methods to some of his tricks. And the knife one, I saw it coming a mile away. I did notice that the knife could stand on it's end, and all I was wondering is - how much did it cost!!!! Did it come with the trick or did he look for it particularily at knives-are-us? LOL! The garbage can routine was amazing too. Now - if anyone cared to notice, when he was getting into it... he had one leg on it's knee ready to go under the can and the other ready to run behind it! Watch it again if you can. But it was still a great effect. TV is just as much fun as a real show if you take away your magicians jealousy and let the guy entertain you. |

Jealousy? Not on your life my friend. Your judgement of what's going on inside of me is off by a country mile.

For me, it was hardly like watching magic. Everything he does is obviously so staged and stooged it is more like watching "punked". It is the viewers at home however that are "punked". I have to say that I watched the show...just wondering..."how many people are buying this as real or impromptu?" I think the best I can compare Criss Angel's show to is WWF wrestling...and we know how much money they made! But..at least WWF had a real audience without camera tricks. I do wonder though how many people feel that either their intellect was insulted or that his show is now slapstick comedy after that being hit by a car thru brick wall scene..?? After seeing that I'm thinking I'll probably catch a Simpsons rerun rather than watch Angel's show again. Hey...I hear he's going to Iran to stand at ground zero for their first nuke test.

I will bet you my entire magic collection that Chris Angel has a paid group of "Extras" reacting to MOST of his street magic. At least the stuff that truly is impossible, such as the trash can dissappearance. Come on! That was a staged event. He simply stopped the camera, got out from under the can, and started filming again. A complete farce. A surround levitation on the street? Ha! Paid film crew and a paid cast of street extras.
His last special was horrible. Getting hit my lightning? A joke. Turned it off and went to bed. Houdini would be ashamed. |

I don't think any Magic show or special can or would be shot without setup or shooting permission. Why would Cris be any different. I watched a movie being shot at Bally's in Vegas a few years ago. They shot the same 20 second setup for the 2 hours I was there time after time. I have no idea how long before I got there or after. Perhaps some of the reaction in the crowd aren't even from the same performance. That another form of magic called editing.

Personally I can't see whats wrong with this 'editing' and false improptu.
At the end of the day it's just another tool the magician has in his arsnel. You don't say, hey he made that coin dissapear but it was not fair as he was wearing a raven! Or, he never made himself levitate because the guy at the side must have been a stooge? So what, it was filmed for the layman at home, and if the layman at home was amazed and entertained then that's all that matters, surley? Just because you can not perform that same effect in the street yourself does not come into it, so what? I think there is a lot of jelously in magic, some people resent criss because he is out there making millions using the same tricks and probably less skill than most of us here, well the one thing this guy has that we don't is the vision and balls to go out there and make a career for himself, the 'business' of showbusiness has nothing to do with the effects you choose and what slights you can do, it's all about presentation, and who you know and having the balls to stand up and be counted rather than hiding in your bedroom showing yourself your latest trick and then feeling envious and jelous of the guy with less skill but 1000% more bottle, foresite and at the end of the day, good busness sense! Rant over. I respect any magician who can make a living from his art, it's NOT easy! |

I really doubt this is impromptu at all.
But rumors of how it is done is that one, or a few of his rings are magnetic, therefore letting him feel where the knife is. |

I think it all comes down to realy good planning and logistics.
A stooge doesn't have to even know that they are a stooge... |

And they provided very nice cover for Angel as he sneaked out through the dirty great hole in the back of the can. Houdini used to do something similar, except without the use of extras or cameras. I have to agree with williamtbrady - whether you like Criss Angel or not, he has filled a hole in the market. Just like pop music and fast food. There's someone out there, somewhere who is enjoying his product and paying heartily for it.
