My friend and I saw a magician at a restaurant perform an effect where he let us examine a cup then when he pulled the cup up again there was a full sized orange inside. Then he said it wouldnt fit pulled the cup up again and then there was another full size orange inside. Any ideas on what's this called?

This was probably a Chop Cup routine, but maybe a Benson Bowl type routine done with a cup. An effect such as this might be done with or without a gimmicked cup. It can be done with oranges, baseballs, or any other item that fits in the cup (or even some items that don't really fit). Usually there is some preliminary routine, often with some small balls appearing and/or disappearing from under the cup. Some magicians use balled up dollar bills or even marshmallows instead. A variation might be to use the cup as a cover for making coins appear and vanish, or make them change into other coins. Any combination of these ideas have been used to ultimately produce an orange, or two, or more, from under a cup. But in the simplest form, if only a single cup was used, a Chop Cup is most often associated with this effect.

Sounds like something of Curtis's from his lecture.
Did the performer do anyting with the cup and a ball beforehand?
...to all the coins I've dropped here

Yes,
I immediately thought of Curtis Kam's Dangerous Notions when I read the description. There is a chop cup routine comprised of only final loads near the end of his lecture notes.

I wonder if this is just a layperson looking for a tip?

I think like Greg, it looks like a bowl routine. I think you can load everything under a bowl, at the moment you use good misdirection, ang giving the cup or the bowl to examination could be a good misdirection. You don't need a gaff or a gimmicked cup or bowl, just uour hands...
Of course you won't load a basket ball... Who knows... |

The shape of the cup of Francis Carlyle made appear the ball, or the load, larger than the cup. It is very useful for this Chop Cup routine with oranges.
