Ok I have owned my needle thru arm for a while now and I really LOVE the effect. However I have been wondering lately if there is such a thing as an improved version of it for STREET.(Yes, Guerilla magic.)
I know Andrew Mayne has a paper clip thru arm and that sounds perfect but the problem is that I would like some blood to pour out of it. Any clue on how to modify a paper clip to have blood? So you know you get the effect of the regular needle effect. I find it really hard to come up with that kind of modified method. I was thinking of modifying a TT but would still have to work out how to drill a hole into the clip. Any ideas guys or a marketed effect that already exist? I just don't want to have to deal with the extreme cleanup of the needle thru arm and make it more of a common item. You know , why would I carry a 7 inch needle!?(Sure I can make it bizarre but I would really like it to be common item.) Oh yeah Screwdriver or Surgical Needle thru arm don't seem to be my cup of tea. Thanks and any help as always is greatly appreciated. |

Make your own paperclip out of thin tubing from a hobby shop or, if you can't find it there, from a scientific supply place. Fitting a bulb to it and hiding the bulb might be a bit of a problem, but not insurmountable. The TT might be the way to go.

Andrew Mayne's Paperclip through arm is very good, and looks totally impromptu.
You could have a stageblood capsule in your mouth and then while apparently cleaning up the mess with your tongue (bizarr, gross, ...) applying as much of as you need on your arm. |

If you are looking at medical/science supply places for the tubing, you will also want to try and find a small capillary tube bulb- ir is a small rubber bulb for the tiny tubes, it will only hold a drop or two, but you will of course pre-load the tube as the capillary action will fill it and keep it there until the bulb is applied. You should be able to get 18-20 ga tubing used as gastric lavage tubes for animal use, they will be stainless steel, and bending them around will make them crack, I would suggest doing the unbending of a regular clip, then, while preparing the area,, you might just "drop the straightened clip" to the floor, and have to reach down to pick it up.....

I am continually amazed at the amount of good information to be found on the Café. Thanks, Kay and Tory. I don't do the needle through arm, but the information may be useful in other ways.

For blood: And why not a small piece of wadding impregnated of "blood" and gripped between the fingers ala "healers Filipinos" This is pressed above the needle (as the crying pencil)? Thus the needle would be clean and be able to be abandoned like "souvenir" between spectators's hands .

All great ideas guys.
Thank you alot. I am still using critical thinking along your ideas to come up with something. So far I think the best approach is to have that squirting TT. I push in the auctual paperclip and while I do so just squirt the TT , I think with little misdirection or covering with the opposite hand I can squirt the blood there. I have a feeling it will work. Now I will buy the TT. Thanks a lot for the help again. I REALLY appreciate it. Any more gold here , keep it coming! ps. I can't find the TT any help? I could of sworn I saw online before.... |

Paisa as I have said in my previous post if you perform a lot of street magic(as in walking up to a person, just walk around...) I would HIGHLY discourage you from getting the Harry Anderson Classic. HOWEVER, The Andrew Mayne effect uses the EXACT same method from what I know so you should just get the Harry Anderson and you get the classic 7 inch needle.Which does look NASTY(in a good way) when it is going through your flesh.....
So what is the reason then for the "don't buy this." Simple, it is HARD to clean up and it is HARD to clean up the needle. The needle is beyond FRAGILE and if you don't clean it up AS SOON AS YOU ARE DONE the needle will not last you long. It will rust and stop working on so many levels. So unless you perform and there is some water next to you most of the time I would say not to get it. The advantage of the paperclip is that paperclips are CHEAP. You can even hand em out when you are done. As of now you can get it off the Andrew Mayne Shock FX...DVD.(I think, I am pretty sure tho...) Disadvatage, NO BLOOD. Which I think is a HUGE problem. I like to make my magic look as natural as possible. Hence I am working on this thread....... To put it in a sentence. Unless you were planning on buying the Andrew Maybe DVD just go ahead and buy the Harry Anderson. It will be the right choice, you know just in case you ever want to use that HUGE needle. Good luck. Oh yeah is the TT that squirts the vernet writer? The "grease" filled one? I don't own one and was thinking that I could refill the "grease" with blood. Is that possible? Thanks. |

The best and a really impromptu method is to do it for real! I do it with a medium sized safety pin on the upperside of my forearm. The only difficulty is to overcome your fear to push the needle through your flesh. It does not really hurt and there will be a tiny drop of blood so there is no need for the fake blood.I have in my pocket a small glass container with some cotton pushed down which is soaked with alcohol this is for cleaning the needle and the spot on your forearm before starting. I never got an infection through all the years I have done this but you do this of course at your own risk.
Some self hypnosis can do miracles.Say for yourself a couple of times "It does not hurt, it does not bleed".I use a safety pin for a better grip as there is some resistance penetrating the flesh. Build up this effect and you have a real winner! This is not a joke, I assure you!! But chose the right people for your demonstation !!!. Remember, any fakir does these things every day!

I had a friend who would push several hatpins through his bicep, flex his arm and BEND the pins, several at one time! These were very large hatpins, and I never saw him bleed. He even let a spectator withdraw the pins from his arm, which always seemed to me a very dangerous thing to do. No way in **** would I try this, but he seemed to suffer no ill effects. He wasn't a carney or anything of the sort. In fact, he was just a college student and member of the local magic club.

Believe me, I have the greatest respect for carneys and fakirs, but personally. . . EEEEEWWWWWWWWW! I'd rather change gender and give birth. Which, just to be clear, is NOT something I want to do either. . . not that there's anything wrong with that. . .

I have had no problems with the Harry Anderson needle. You do not have to rush to clean it. It is a bit fragile, but not unreasonably so, just get something to carry it in. Wash it out after you get home. I even forgot to clean it once for three days, and still I had no problems.
Unilogo also had the criticism that it was hard to clean up. Usually I don't even try, leaving the wound. If you do want to miracle healing of the wound, just have a wet towel handy, and scrub it hard for a few seconds. I like this prop. For street magic? Might be tough. Sensei Strange |

How about using the old squirting nickel filled with some fake stage blood ?
The nickel would be small enough to conceal - Palmed, finger clipped, sleeved, etc. Then just get it between your thumb and first finger as you get the paper clip " Into your arm ". Squeeze the coin and leave a bit of the blood there. Maybe mark the back of the coin with magic marker to let you know where the pin hole is on the other side of the coin. That way you know where the blood will come out. Also, just give the coin a quick squeeze. Don't fill it up too much either. You don't need a lot. If the stage blood is too thick for the coin, try red food coloring. Just some thoughts. Don't know if it will actually work. Regards, Matt |

Matt Morell, You have a brilliant idea. For all you bizzarists out there listen. Collect some change from the audience. And add in some sleight of hand to add a blood filled nickel in the bunch of coins. Do some theatre and talk about Josepie (the mafia creater,I believe)and blood money. This is a lot more important than you think don't just say ow look there blood on the coins. Now as you speek squeeze the coin and produce blood. And reveal. Nice effect and from all you guys that perform stigmata it proly has the same effect which I heard was strong. Plus supplies are really cheap. Comment on what you think. Thanks Matt

When I was performing the paper clip I was taking half of a blood capsule and inserting the blood in there with a little bit of sponge to cap the end of the capsule. Then I would hide the capule in my arm and then I would push the sponge as it would force the blood to be pushed out as I would then pull back the paperclip and move around the capsule. Get the fillable capsule that break down when in contact with anything wet. Also prepare the capsule a while before using it and it will soften the capsule to fit more comfortablly. These capsules can be bought at most theatrical supply stores.

Hey Joe,
Thanks for the kind words about the squirting nickel. To be honest, I've never tried the idea out so I don't know how well it will work -( If at all ). I hope it does. I'll have to dust the old coin off and try it soon. I suppose it could also be used for the infamous " Poppin' a Zit " gag - hahaha ( just load it with 1 percent milk as it is watered down and " Tasteless " )! or how about the Torn and Restored coffee creamer ? - Pretend to peel open a creamer lid, have the loaded coin behind it and give it a sleight squeeze as you apparently are dumping a little onto the table or into your coffee . Give the lid a small rub and it's now restored. Use a small " rip gaff " which you can add to the top of the creamer lid to make it really look like it's open. Just some thoughts. If stupid, then o'well ! Wouldn't be the first for me !! Regards, Matt |
