You must get used to the rest of the world having distorted opinions about americans, It is a stereotypical but common view that all yanks have no idea about the rest of the world. So our assumption of the rest of the world's ignorance is true!? Whew...our intellectual superiority does reign supreme. C'mon Partizan let's at least try and keep political propoganda from these forums. It is statements exactly like the one you made that propogates stereotypes. Am I to believe your statement that the rest of the world is ignorant to the cultural knowledge of Americans? In regard to the actual topic...Magicmaven, I departed from magic at a young age and what you speak of is one of the reasons why. Now much older and somewhat wiser I realized it was I that failed to garner the respect I wanted. Youth and inexperience allowed me to be intimidated and in return I created an authoritarian and defensive persona that only made things worse. Back into magic now I laugh at situations that would have left me distraught before. I treat magic with the practice to perfection that it deserves and my spectators with the respect I would want given to me. I hate to be cliche but that old agage as to why to never wrestle with a pig plays hard in performing magic. |

Yes but. We need them to disrust us. If they did not, there would be no magic.
Trust Example: Here is a closed empty box when I open it, you will see I have made a pretty girl appere inside! = No magic. Distrust Example: Here is an open empty box, come and inspect it, to see that I tell the truth, now I will make a pretty girl appere inside. = magic. Do you like the patter? None the less do you see the point. We need disrespect in the form of distrust to make magic.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

Thank you ALL! Got some great stuff to work with here, thank you.
So, am I a capturing this correctly? Define persona Be confident, in control, without overbearing Understand what magic is, what people think magic is Respect magic (!!!) Respect spectators with the respect I want to recieve Don't get flustered by disrespectful spectators, but rather learn from them Am I grasping this correctly? Again, Thanks!

Think youre nailing it pretty well...
some of those questions will never be answered throughly, and some will change over time as you progess. like what people think magic is. There really is no concrete answer to that question. You will get a miryad of versions. Its almost like asking what do people think of sushi, pizza or Santa . Guess the best question would be what do YOU want people to think of YOUR magic. What is the ends to your means. Some do it for amazement, some do it to pick up girls, some do it because they like the attention, some are as malevolent as to just do it for the sole purpose to expose the methods. WHy are YOU performing magic? Respect magic: what does this exactly mean to other magicians? Im curious as to the answers. To me respect magic is to give it my all when doing it. To ensure that you are totally ready, confident and able to perform a specific effect. I would NEVER show a little something that I learned 10 min. ago....I used to do that when starting up, but now I know better. Showing off badly performed effects not only degrades your magic, but the magic of others as well, since most people will base your magic as to how " all magicians usually are". respecting magic to me is also demanding that others do the same. ONe thing is a little heckler that stares at you for a bit too long, another is someone that just comes over and yanks the cards from your hand, peeks at a card, shuffles it and tells you " now find my card". People like that aren't ready for the gift of magic, and honestly they don't deserve it. Again, you have to draw a line as to how far will you let that smart behind get away with things. its part of respecting magic.

Let me recommend Dr. Bill Nagler's lecture notes:
"It is Not Fun to be Fooled" Although these notes have been around for years, they are prehaps the most overlooked and best advice with regard to how magicians should treat spectators. I believe they are still available at Bill's website http://www.25offmagic.com which is a fun website to visit anyhow. |

Dave, my remark about ports and harbours was a satirical sexual slander against you (like a dig but in fun).
John Bowlin. My remarks are what I know about other people, not what I think myself. I have family in america ie. some of my family are american of 3 generations. I love America but I know what I like about it and what I don't like, other non-americans slate america in response to the media's depiction of your country. In short, If it was not for Europe, America as we know it would not exist. If it were not for America (WWII) then Europe as we know it would not exist.

The other day, I was performing the a three card monte routine and one of the kids took my indifferent card from my DL... I was kind of shocked... but then I just snaped my finger before he could look at it and said that it has transfered to the top. a little disrespectful... but kids are stupid, they will believe almost anything ^_^;...

The closest I ever got to this type of approach was when I was reading through some Gazzo material. Like I said, I don't present magic like a con or loke a "haha I tricked you." I think this approach is extremely difficult to pull off, but capable. I don't have the skills to pull this off, nor do I want to use this strategy. I haven't read these lecture notes, but I can tell you one thing--treating my spectators with respect is one of my attributes, I don't have problems with this, please, stop implying that this is my problem.

Sorry if my attempt to offer advice regarding the general trend of the discussion offended you. I don't believe I implied anything with regard to you or your performances. My comments were certainly not directed at you in any way and I fail to see why you are taking such umbrage at the general recommendation of lecture notes that would probably benefit most any magician that choose to read them. In fact, if you have an opportunity to read these notes, you will find they deal with much more than treating spectators with respect. Bill |
