I had mixed feelings about Pure Effect. I like the writing style and found it a very interesting read, but from a practical standpoint, there wasn't much I could put into practice. Much of it is very tied to Darren's performance style and some effects (like one that requires an audience that carries around British coins) wouldn't work in the states for me. That said, the book is notable for ability to get your juices and creativity flowing.

I found Derrens book to be very good but I believe there is a review in the Good Bad and Garbage section. He also has a new book out which is currently only available from him which focuses on building your performing character. I don't have the book myself as it's quite expensive (£35 or about $50) and is relatively slim. That's not to say of course that the information within isn't worth many more times that. I'll post a review if I ever procure a copy.

Oh, in that case..did I say I had mixed reviews? What I meant to say was that it is one of the most brilliant books on magic and mentalism that has been produced in the last 50 years! No mentalist or magician should be without it. And I just happened to have a copy that I'll be happy to let go for 3 times the retail price.

As you based in the UK and will have seen Derren's TV shows, I'm assuming you are fishing to find out whether he discusses methods behind the effects from "Mind Control". The quick answer is no. I wouldn't recommend either of DB's books to people looking for routines or methods. Pure Effect does have some strong close-up effects, but they are technically advanced and peculiar to Derren (although I have heard some people say they use "Smoke" to great effect). Absolute Magic is a book in the vein of Strong Magic by Ortiz, or Our Magic by Maskelyne and Devant. It is a treatise on the performance of close-up although much of the thinking could be applied to mentalism. Both of his books contain some excellent, thought provoking writing. If you are a performer looking for inspiration to improve your presentation you will get a lot out of them. |

I heard that the book contaned some good info in performing, just like what you said above. Im not after the method of his effects, i try and stay away from other peoples routines, just info on ways you can perform a effect in a way that can make the effect seem different. If you see what i mean.

Hi All, the book must be something else as a chap who uses the name Charlie Chuckles offered me a photo-copy of the first print for (quote)"I am certainly looking at a three figure sum" recently in reply to a "wanted" advert on the Magic Week forum.
(By the way , I now have a copy of the second edition , sadly missing "Lift" & "Reminiscence", but lifes like that ! ) regards Mark.

I got nothing from this book. I expected alot because everyone raved about it but to me it was just hype. I have not seen his show but I have heard mixed reviews on that as well.

Diffunt strokes fo' diffunt folks, Mark. I thought it was one of the better books I've read in a long time. I was far less interested in the routines than I was on his thinking of how to create effective magic. He certainly got me thinking about what I'm doing, and any book that does that gets higher marks from me.

If anyone is interested in purchasing a copy, Peter Nardi managed to buy the last batch from Derren.

Same here. I know way too many tricks as it is. (I am sure I am alone in this thinking, right?) Still, I found it to be a very forgettable book. You know how it is? You hear nothing but hype about stuff and when you get to see it for yourself, it rarely lives up to it. That was my impression.
