Two of my friends who have met Eugene Burger say he has this impossible card trick with a borrowed deck where he just deals through the cards, tells you to think of any card at all, and you know it. It has supposedly fooled every magician that were around my friends. Keep in mind it uses a borrowed deck and the cards are ALL dealt face up. Anyone know anything about this?

Your friends probably thought that the card trick that Eugene Burger did was with a borrowed deck. Actually, Burger is well known to perform his "Thought Sender" routine which is a well thought out effect. Check out his website: http://www.magicbeard.com Look under the PRODUCTS section; you'll have to scroll down a bit.
I remember the last time Burger lectured at the Magic Castle he blew away a lot of guys with this trick. |

If it is Thought Sender your friends' memories are a bit off. That trick doesn't involve dealing and it would be hard to imagine it being done with a borrowed deck. However, Thought Sender is a very nice routine.

Maybe theyre 2 different tricks then, coz my friend claims he gave eugene his casino brand of cards and it still worked

Eugene is one clever guy, I can tell you that. I have had the privilege of seeing and learning this trick that you are referring to from Eugene himself this past summer. It is unpublished, and it is sensational. That's all I have to say.

This is the description my friend told me today:
1. deck is borrowed, shuffled, and spread face down 2. spectator picks any card at random 3. spectator turns over the card 4. magician reaches in his top pocket and takes out its mate |

Bob Solari has a brilliant version of the Brainwave deck that's a very similar effect- and the deck is inspectable! It plays out the same (at least, from what I've seen on Eugene's video...) check it out!

I think this is Eugene's version of Vernon's "Impossible Card Trick". Eugene really baffled me with it too!
Your friends description is accurate!

Aussiemagic is correct. It is Eugene's improvement on Vernon's Trick That Can't Be Explained. He's awesome at it. You have to see it live to appreciate it.
No card indexes, no anything. Totally impromptu. |

Make no mistake. Eugene Burger is a master of his craft. I had the privelege of watching him totally mystify a group of magicians with some impromptu card material he was performing a few years ago at a convention. To this day, I have no idea how he accomplished some of the things I saw him do.
He does not "show off" in his instructional tapes and DVDs. He's a lot better in person than many people think. Ben Blau

According to the Café rules, we are not supposed to come on and ask for how marketed tricks work, or tell how marketed tricks work - but it seems to be ok for us to ask how an unpublished routine from someone's private repertoire is done, and tell how someone's routine is done. If you would like to know Eugene's secret, ask Eugene. He has a website and is around magicians constantly. Why go behind his back and try to take something from you he apparently was not willing to give?

Where can I find Vernon's impossible trick? Is that the trick where he makes a prediction the back of a cigarette box?

I have had Eugene perform this for me as well. There is a lot missing in the description. But it is cool to see how people remember a trick that really fools them!
The cards are ribbon spread and you select one through a series of (seemingly) very fair means. In actuality, there are several methods at work here. It is not something that everybody can pull off. Sometimes it works better than other times. It is at those times that a real miracle seems at play. If you were to see a demo when all things go right it would fool you. If you were to watch it when things didn't go as well, it might still fool you and it is still very clever, however, not near as strong! Nothing new here, but I think Eugene will tip his workings on it someday. Most would never use it. |

"Thought Sender", with one small modification (the effect on the spectator will be exactly the same), can easily be performed with a borrowed deck. I know this after watching the video once. Seemed obvious to me. And no "special" deck is required. Also no equivoque.
