The best thing for an object of that size is the Cellini topit design. It allows the object to settle away from you, even all the way around to the other side of the coat. And his method of holding the topit open for ditching an item is simple but clever.

Unless the topit is accessible on the outside, through the pocket, I would think that producing the grapefruit would be a challenge. I have the Cellini pattern, but havent built one yet since I really don't have teh right coat for it. I need a longer coat. Anyway, I think he tips it on the Art of Street Performing #1

I use the ammmar topit (It goes in with safety pins in a number of my perfroming jackets..) for coin vanishes ( a muscle pass and a silver dollar is gone) and to vanish a deck of cards when done with a card trick. But have never really tried producing anything from it.

Also, Harry Murphy has made the excellent suggestion here on ocassion of using a ladies hairnet with safety pins as a quick topit. Tear out the bottom of you pocket so that you can reach in a grab the grapefuit out of the net, and it might be a quick way to test the concept beofre you really build out a topit for yourself.

Mario my friend, I can point you to the exact way of doing it... Smile

Try to locate an old *Pabular* magazine ( after all your english based and I suppose you have some friends ? Smile) and read about Dick Turpin..

That guy was a BUSKER, and his timetested routine is thoroughly explained in Pabular, Volume 6, no. 9, September 1980..
Forget the clever stuff....do it as a REAL busker did through many yearss and with sucess.....

Mario, I hope you have a chance to study the handling of Dick Turpin...

It's all in getting them accustomed to a certain (and natural) 'stance'/bodyposition, as shown in Fig. 2 of the mentioned description.

Also, the *kicker* is highlighted because of one does start up with what I call *small-time* magic, magic almost done by everybody else... a simple coinvanish, in this case though done by a performer knowing what he does, and so keeping the interest of the crowd..
They follow along with interest, but they never expect anything earthshattering..
I think, that's the philosophy and thinking behind this and that's what makes it such a big surprise..

It's like good joketellers revealing the secret behind their success, talking along and about absolutely 'normal' things and then BANG, the surprise, nobody did expect...
Good luck with that load...it will get remembered for a long time, better then any fancy cardsleight that took a lifetime to perfect... Smile

Tonight is the night for me.
I will be using my topit in a close-up competition.
Starting of with ambitious card then going into three shell game and finishing with single c&b routeen my end production is three large balls form under the cup and a large base ball from under my hat.
We will see if I win!

To mention,,,,if you check out an old copy of "Magic Mag" I believe Martin Breeze is now selling the complete collection on CD you will find under my writings a Topit of my own making,,,,called the Kopit, this preceeded anyone else who later came along with the"Idea" Of a connection between the inner poachers pocket and the outer jacket pocket!!!

This I have used on occassion for many years,,,,if it were coupled to Cellini`s method of rig up,fixed or free, would be the ultimate in a body Servante.
Possible of multiple vanishes and productions etc.

Ken.

BTW I never gave selling or production rights to anyone!!!

I use my topits (one in each side) quite a bit. Mostly to clean up after a routine. For example, after my mini leather chop cup routine I point out that the real reason that I use the leather cup is that it is compressible. I clap my hands together with the leather cup between them and the cup is gone!

I also vanish my invisible deck with it. Showing that it is invisible after all. I do a coin manipulation routine where I produce a series of coins and vanish them with the topit.

I have produced a bottle of wine too, but I had to do that near the start of the show and I've changed my opener so I don't do that any more.

If you want to have fun at a lecture or a magic club meeting (NEVER during a performance of one of our busking brothers), sit in the second row or third row of the crowd. If the lecturer is using a topit, and isn't very good at it. Strike a cowbell with a stick everytime he pops something into the topit.
