I thought magic died when Harry Potter turned 70, marries his young assistant...
My bad, that was an excerpt from a prediction I sealed for the year 2045 IBMSAM Convention.

"Ok! Nice effort, Brad, but let's remember our performance hierarchy:
Legitimate theater - Musical theater - Stand-up - Ventriloquism - Magic - Mime." Family Guy. Magic has an indentity crisis, manic-depression, multiple identity disorder, and is prone to televisual fits. It's not dead, it's just sitting in a corner, gently rocking... |

They are both destinations for people who want to partake of the type of entertainment available in the place. But we don't see the major touring stars today performing and behaving the way they did twenty years ago; even DC changed his look and approach when he decided to move from being a magician to being a celebrity. Madonna updated her approach, as did Michael Jackson, as did a lot of others. I'm not sure if I'd say they "evolved," but they certainly kept up with the times, even while maintaining their distinctness. I don't know... from hanging around the Café for the last couple of years and reading what people here are saying, it's obvious to me that even a simple question like "Why hasn't magic caught on" can be interpreted in totally different ways, depending on where someone is sitting. Therefore I've come up with "Ledo's Oversimplified and Highly Arguable Theory of Cause and Effect in Magic:" If you want to fool people, you do tricks. If you want to create an illusion, you do magic. If you want to make money at magic, you entertain the general public. If you want to make mega-big bucks at magic, you become a celebrity. Is this really any different from what other entertainers do?

Marry a film star or two. That should be no problem for an enterprising magician.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.
